Re: So, What comics did you buy this week?
Got Fables Vol. 17 in the mail today.
And I checked out a young readers' graphic novel adaptation of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. It's the sort of thing I'd pass on, except I saw "Grant" on the spine and had to check if it was Alan Grant. Not only did he write it, but Cam Kennedy drew it, and that seemed like a match made in heaven... or at least Gotham. (Don't believe I've ever seen anything by that team before, and gothic horror seems a better fit for Kennedy than the sorta weird-looking Star Wars stuff.)
Edit: Well, shit, it looks like not only those two have collaborated quite a few times, but Kennedy's done a pretty good amount of respectable stuff that's not Dark Empire, mostly in 2000 AD.

Well, Dark Empire was 20+ years ago. Didja think the guy was just sitting on his thumbs the whole time?
Speaking of Star Wars, did you see Brian Woods is doing what looks to be a continuity cleansing Star Wars comic set immediately after ANH? Northlanders is amazing and I'm working on a DMZ run, so Woods name on anything gets my attention. I probably won't pick up his SW book but it certainly sounds intriguing. Leia is an X-Wing pilot?

Re: So, What comics did you buy this week?
Nah, but I'd not seen his name on anything. I figured maybe he was one of those guys who never hit it big in the States, but didn't realize he was this big 2000 AD guy. I kinda pegged him as sorta like the two guys who drew Transformers G2 (Yaninger and Galan, IIRC), whose art was pretty damned awesome, but so incredibly fucking wrong for that title.
I read up on the SW title. On the one hand, awesome. On the other, mmmmmm, ummmmm.... It sounds at first like a reboot, and, God knows, Lucasfilm has a hard-on for retconning lately. (They fucking re-released all the young reader TPM books to coincide with the 3D release... and changed the wording of the ending to make sure they referred to Maul's "nearly lifeless" body.) Rebooting wouldn't be an awful idea, especially with good talent involved, but, at the same time, this is the EU era that's actually got nostalgia appeal. They disregarded a lot of it (mostly the Marvel run, especially the "spend three years hunting Boba Fett" bit), but then sort of "re-canonized" it, and it would be odd to un-canonize it again.
And, goddammit, the focus would mean it completely eliminates a certain badass green space rabbit. And Vader's Quest, which is mostly a weak miniseries, but, holy fuck, the scene of Vader losing his shit when he hears the name "Skywalker" makes up for the rest of it.
One line in the article refers to Lucasfilm's continuity expert, though, so it makes me think they're shoehorning this into the already way the fuck too crowded time period, and will do their thing of figuring out sequence after the fact. (The hoops they had to leap through to reconcile the Tartakovsky cartoon and the Clone Wars issues of the Republic comic, much less the tie-in novels, were fucking insane, and that's before the ongoing cartoon showed up.) At this point, we've got three years (which I'm assuming is still in stone) before ESB. That has to include the original Marvel series, the newspaper strip, a few young readers books from the 70s, the Empire comic, Splinter of the Mind's Eye, the Rebel Mission to Ord Mantell record, and now this. Fuck, these characters never even get to go to the fucking bathroom.

Star Wars characters don't go to the bathroom. There is naturally occurring enzyme their bodies produce that eliminates waste internally and then secretes it as sweat and/or expels it as a sweet smelling odor from their mouths.
Another fun fact. Star Wars characters don't have taste buds. So they can eat the blandest looking shit imaginable and never really bitch about because they don't know any better. Like that nasty porridge shit Beru makes on Tatooine. Or the nasty crap Luke is carrying in his survival kit on Dagobah.

Re: So, What comics did you buy this week?
Atomic Robo: Real Science Adventures 1-4
Transformers: ReGeneration One 80.5-81
X-Statix Omnibus (autographed, and, holy shit, this book is huge)
Action Comics #1 (they were giving it away free--I didn't get it from DC, but a friend I was trading with did and already had it)
G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #180 Comic-Con variant (autographed by Herb Trimpe, but, sadly, I was unable to get Larry Hama's John Hancock)
TMNT giveaway of some sort
Atomic Robo 2012 FCBD book
two other books the guy at Red Five gave me and I don't remember off-hand
I figure the X-Statix book was signed and for charity, and so damned unavailable, that I didn't mind too much getting it. After all, I skipped on Shockwave and won't be buying any more Joe stuff until February.
I considered picking up the Speed Racer comic from the company who has the rights, some Colombian publisher with no US presence, but they apparently don't understand the value of getting their damned book in people's hands. The artwork did not strike me as being worth $4.
I also wanted to look into the print version of Archie's Red Circle heroes. I'm not a fan of Archie, but I wouldn't mind supporting them in some way because they're kinda kicking Marvel and DC's ass in the groundbreaking and integrity departments of late. But Gene Simmons was making an appearance, and I could not get near the booth. Hey, get traffic that doesn't give a shit about your comics at the expense of people who do; I guess that's the Comic-Con way!
BTW, apologies Rollo, but I realized as I was leaving I could've picked up the TF:RG1 #81 Megatron cover for you. They had both. I thought the Megatron was bitching, but loved the retro coloring effect on the Hot Rod cover, and, besides, they're both Wildman, so it's not like either one of them doesn't kick ass.

Re: So, What comics did you buy this week?
S'alright. Getting the "right" cover is only about a 5% priority for me. It just annoys me that IDW is the company that does the 50/50 cover shit when, if you look at their sales numbers from Diamond, their books are only selling like 8,000-10,000 copies. When you divvy that up amongst a couple thousand Retailers across the country, it's like "Hey, crapshoot on which cover you get!" and not "Hey, a wider variety for you to choose from!"
Also, considering Diamond pretty much now sucks at getting undamaged books to Retailers(the idea of M/NM books nowadays is like Unicorns) you're basically looking at the corners and edges rather than the cover art in deciding which cover to grab.

Re: So, What comics did you buy this week?
Batgirl #11 - Babs faces off against Knightfall (Kinightfall? Couldn't think of a better name, huh?) and her cronies.
Batman #11 - Bats faces off against the man who may (or may not) be Thomas Wayne Jr. in a fight that ends up leveling the new Wayne Tower, killing the possible Wayne brother (or did it? Mystery!). When the tower crumbles it looks way too 9/11 for me, and is apparently all cleaned up in days with zero casualties.
Batman and Robin #11 - Damien continues to be a dick to the past Robins and beats the shit out of Jason with a crowbar, while some other shit happens with some lame bad guys.
Batman: Arkham Unhinged #4 - Three short Arkham City stories with Harley, Freeze and Hugo Strange. One has fun with the use of the extra costumes you can download.
Before Watchmen: Minutemen #2 - The Minutemen go on their first mission, fuck it up and spin it to look like heroes. Later, Nite Owl, Mothman and Silhouette look for a serial child kidnapper.
Bionic Man #10 - Steve saves the day. End of Kevin Smith's script. A new writer takes over next month. Dropped.
A Game of Thrones #9 - The Hound and the Mountain face pff and Catelyn takes Tyrion prisoner.
Space: Punisher #1 - I have no idea what the hell this is...except really fucking weird and insane, stupid fun. Frank Castle searches the galaxy in his Punisher logo shaped spacehip, with his robot/droid Chip, for the "Intergalactic Mafia" that killed his family. He finds one member, a Brood/Symbiote hybrids and kills them. Weird space versions of Corsair, Rhino, Doc Ock, Green Goblin, Magneto, Red Skull, Ultron, Deadpool, Sabretooth and The Leader all show up. From what little I know of it, it feels very Heavy Metal (maybe 2000 A.D.) inspired.
This week:
Avengers Vs. X-Men #8 - Namor destroys Wakanda and is eventually defeated by the Avengers. His Pheonix powers are divided up between the other 4 PheoniX-Men (hey, it's catch ing on!). Did Adam Kubert have a stroke or something? The guy used to be a pretty good artist. This issue looked like shit.
Before Watchmen: Silk Spectre #2 - Laurie gets involved with some hippies and discovers a mind-control/drug ring. My first real let down in Before Watchmen so far.
Catwoman #11 - Catwoman and her double-crossing buddy Spark team up with the cop trying to take Selina down to catch Dollhouse.
Daredevil #15 - A completely senseless DD is captured by on of Doom's lackeys. Hornhead manages to signal the Avengers for help, who (apparently) were only seconds away from Latveria.
Untold Tales of the Punisher Max #2 - Another mostly Punisher-less story (*sigh*), with Frank held captive by some hicks who argue about whether or not to kill Frank or sell him. The art has a very R. Crumb's feel to it.
Batman: Earth One - Free Preview - Poop.

That Jason/Crowbar meme has been beat to death (ba-DUM Tssss). But seriously, that's the 20th time they've made crowbar central to some Jason and/or Robin story. We get it, already.
And in the Daredevil issue, Matt realizes he's still in Latveria because he sees a painting of Dr. Doom on the wall. BZZZZT! Sorry, Marvel, that's not how Matt's powers work. He'd see the frame maybe. The painting would look like a flat black image to him.

Re: So, What comics did you buy this week?
I heard that they're debuting a lot of new Batman villains soon. First, Batman will tangle with Joker's protege, Killing Joke. Then Knightfall's brothers, Knightsquest (who has two distinct personalities, "The Searcher" and "The Crusader") and Knightsend hire their mutual friend Prodigal to help them avenge her. Then, Red Robin will face his inner demons when Lonely Place learns his secret, that he may or may not have been Robin, but no one knows. Long Halloween will then attempt to kill Scarecrow and Calendar Man to, uh, steal their gimmicks.
I could go on all day. But any funny was already used up long ago.
And the only fucking villain they need to introduce who's named after a story would be Louie the Lilac al-the-fuck-ready.

I understand Norman Sland has an obstacle course in front of his hideout that's so nasty that it almost counts as a villain in its own right: The Road to Norman Sland.RoIIo Tomassi wrote:You forgot the triple threat of Contagion, Cataclysm, and Norman Sland.

Didn't they say that was Matt's eyes actually kinda barely working again to make up for his lack of other senses? Matt said something like "I thought my sensory enhancements were a one time thing. Apparently not."RoIIo Tomassi wrote:And in the Daredevil issue, Matt realizes he's still in Latveria because he sees a painting of Dr. Doom on the wall. BZZZZT! It kinda looked like a sort of thermal vision, which would also make zero sense to heat and depth in a painting.

Re: So, What comics did you buy this week?
2 weeks. 2 dozen books. Let's begin.
Last week:
Atomic Robo: Real Science Adventures 4. Its got a parody of 90s Comics Culture AND Robo sparring with Bruce Lee. At this point, if you're not reading AR you're a Commie.
Avenging Spidey 9. Spidey teams up with spiffy new Captain Marvel Carol Danvers in her spiffy new uniform.
New Avengers 28. AvX tie in. Spider-Woman, Luke Cage, and Hawkeye break out of the X-Men's brig. Except it's all a cruel mindfuck by Emma Frost. An endless loop of escaping in their minds.
AvX 7. T'Challa slapping Tony Stark and telling him to man up was the highlight of this issue.
AvX:VS 4. Daredevil(ninja) fights Psylocke(ninja). It ends in a draw. But it was written by Remender, so really the losers were the readers. And Emma Frost fights Thor. But she's got Pheonix powers so that's kind of a cheat when she wins.
Avengers Assemble 5. The Guardians of the Galaxy show up. They and the Avengers figure out the US Military made another Cosmic Cube and that's what Thanos stole(took really). I love how Rocket Raccoon is thoroughly unimpressed with Captain America. And I'm going to have wiki how Starlord is back.
Captain America 14. Cap finds out he's fighting D-Man right before Sharon shoots and kills him. Thus wasting another potentially awesome villain. Way to go, Bru.
Fantastic Four Annual 33. First Part of a crossover with the DD and Wolverine Annuals. Alan Davis brings back his ClanDestine for one more time tripping story.
Game of Thrones 9. The Clegane bros. fight at the joust. Tyrion gets taken hostage by Lady Stark.
GIJoe 15. Scarlett makes out with Mainframe during the rescue. The rest of the team is lost down in the caverns.
New Mutants 45. The team finds out the badguy from the future is Doug in Technarch Armor.
Scarlet Spider 7. Kaine gets on Roxxon Oil's bad side and they sic The Rangers, Texas' very own Super-Team, on him.
WaX-Men 13. AvX tie in. We learn who the new Warbird is as she protects Kid Gladiator at the behest of his father. A touching character study of a minor character.
And this week:
Avengers Academy 33. Pheonix Emma Frost show up and dismantles Juston's Pet Sentinel. The Academy kids oppose her, and Quicksilver shows some rare compassion with a speedy slight of hand. Then Hank Pym shuts down the school because of AvX.
AvX 8. Namor fucks up Wakanda and loses his powers. The Avengers sneak off to K'un L'un. Hope asks if there's a plan. I find that ironic because it doesn't seem as if the five man writing team had one when they started this.
Captain Marvel 1. First Issue of Carol Danvers as CM. Suprisingly good work by Kelly Sue and newcomer artist Dexter Soy.
Daredevil 15. Daredevil escapes from Latveria's Comptroller or Head Accountant. Who the fuck is this poindexter? Actually, escapes is the wrong word. Iron Man has to come rescue him. Pussy.
Fantastic Four 608. Suri, Storm, and Susan Storm all do some Wakandan herbs and have a group trip. T'Challa gets awesome new(er) Black Panther powers.
Cobra 15. We are introduced to Cobra Commander's son. And yes, his name is Billy. No eyepatch yet though. That comes later.
Iron Man 521. Picks up six months after last issue. Stark has been living in Mandarin's Barracks/Penal Colony for six months, helping him build shit with Zeke Stane, who's almost a drooling zombie.
New Mutants 46. The team defeats future Doug. Then they start wondering if present Doug is going to be a problem and start taking steps.
Untold PunisherMAX 2. Some toothless backwoods hillbilly assholes all kill each other, rather than putting a bullet in Frank's noggin, who is trussed up in the barn hanging by his feet like a turkey. Idjits.
Journey into Mystery 641. Triple Agent Loki helps the Manchester Gods take over Otherworld in a bloodless coup. Not realizing they work for Surtur of Muselpheim. I will be sorry when Marvel NOW takes this book away from me.
X-Factor 240. A brilliant homage to Run,Lola,Run shoes us how Layla "I know stuff" Miller perceives the world.
Uncanny X-Men16 560. AvX tie in. The PheoniX-Men attack Sinister's hidden underground cavern...and get thoroughly trounced by him. I sooooo call bullshit.

Re: So, What comics did you buy this week?
Psylocke would beat DD in a fair fight. I prefer DD, but Psylocke has the telepathy, which trumps super senses.
If what you said about G.I. Joe is true, I might be dropping a title. It's been hit and miss, and I want Mainframe and Helix to go on a mission together into the sewers and die covered in shit. I am getting fucking sick of that putz and that superpowered Mary Sue. Not even what you said represents and why it's so wrong. Mainframe is a dipshit and seems to always come out on top. Hence the comparison to Helix.

Well, according to Remender, Psylocke is "overwhelmed" by the sensory overload by entering DDs mind.
And at the end of the fight Matt says something terribly contrite like "Maybe the PheoniX Five are wrong. Think about THAT!" and then walks away. Wow, thats deep, Rick. Thanks Bunky. Also, he keeps having DD say 'we' in internal monologue. We as in the Avengers. As if Daredevil is so comfortable being an Avenger, it's his defining trait now. Forgetting that DD has only been an Avenger since post-Fear Itself. Which in Marvel time has been roughly three days. He's been on ONE mission as an Avenger, and that the epic long fight with Osborne for the last six months in the two Avengers books. He'd still be casting himself as an outsider in his mind. But Rememder is a shitty writer who can't be bothered with previous characterizations of core Heroes who've been around for fifty years.
It annoys me that so many people are like "Rick Remender on Uncanny Avengers! Yay! Best book evah!!"
God he sucks ass.
