So I was just in the shower thinking about Hockey Night in Canada coming back on tonight & I was surprised that emotions welled up inside me, almost to the point of feeling like I was going to cry. The reason? The new theme song came into my head.

Usually I'm a traditionalist. I was NOT fucking happy when the news broke that the CBC had somehow lost the rights to the old school HNIC theme, a song I've known my whole life. The media circus that followed, including the reality show style competition for the new opening music made my stomach churn. That all went away very quickly when I saw the new opening, with the new music interspersed with some classic bits from commentators featured on the show married up with short snippets of some all time great hockey highlights (yes Stevie Y's OT winner against St. Louis is in there, of course it is). That opening is unbelievably awesome - to say they nailed it perfectly doesn't come close to doing it justice.

So I'm in the shower thinking of this opening, and then my thoughts turned to all the young kids who haven't had the chance to build those memories this past few months while the fat hogs & greedy pigs duked it out over billions of dollars. Who knows what the long-term effects of this will be on fandom? I dunno. I do know that I'll likely tune in tonight, at least for the opening and the first bit with Ron & Don to hear what they have to say, but I'm not watching the game and I'm not watching the advertising, at least not tonight.

The Center Ice package is free until Jan 31, so I watched some of that game last night. If it helps any, when the season was shortened because of the 1995 lock-out, the Devils lost their first 4 games but went on to win The Cup.

Why do networks give failed coaches/GMs jobs as analysts? The NFL has guys like Matt Millen and Herm Edwards. Mike Milbury is the guy in the NHL. He's credited with making some of the worst trades in league history. Oh, and he is still a douche.

Well R2, one of the best coaches in the league, Lindy Ruff, has been fired by the Sabres. Yep, it was all his fault.

I'm quite certain he will find work in short order.

It was time for him to go. The team quit on him. They haven't looked prepared at all. The only reason their record isn't worse is because of Miller. As Matthew Barnaby and Phil Esposito said on the radio today, that first goal last night against Winnipeg was a prime example of that. The team has talent. They went on that run after the All-Star break last year. Unfortunately, they sucked so bad before that, the best record in the league during the 2nd half couldn't get them into the playoffs.

From what they were saying, Darcy Regier's job isn't safe yet. They will evaluate the team for the rest of the year under the intrem coach. This summer, they could try to get Dallas Eakins from the Marleys. Or if they want to go with ex-Sabres, they could hire Rick Dudley as the new GM and Bob Boughner as the next coach.

Its old news now, but the league approved realignment. As part of that, Detroit, Tampa, and Florida will join the current Northeast division. So, I guess if the Sabres ever decide to be good again, they are going to have to go through Detroit.

It's ok for Detroit & Columbus to be in the east for travel reasons, but notsogood for when it comes time for competing for playoff spots. The teams in the east are more betterer.

I was watching a Penguins game and they zoomed in on Marc Andre Fleury's mask. At first I thought it was Grimlock, but it turns out it was a steel penguin.
