Of course, they had the nerve to ask why I wouldn't see Smurfs 2 on opening weekend and made it an open-ended question, so I was able to use words like "crap" and "rather die than see."

Re: Top Summer Film of 2013
I did a movie survey yesterday and realized: I'm not excited about a single 2013 summer movie.
Of course, they had the nerve to ask why I wouldn't see Smurfs 2 on opening weekend and made it an open-ended question, so I was able to use words like "crap" and "rather die than see."

Casting Depp as Tonto doesn't bother me in the least.anarky wrote:I'm sure the backlash about a white dude playing an Indian did them no services.
I've also read a couple of reviews that said it paid little heed to the source material, which is unfortunate.
I'm not sure what they're referring to, but John Reid and his bother's posse get ambushed by Butch Cavendish, and Reid makes a mask from his dead brother's vest, with the bullet holes being the eyes. That's how I always remembered the origin, and that's how it plays out in the movie. They might have expanded Tonto's origin a bit so that it works in with LRs.
I saw it today. But, no matter what anyone says about it, if it's getting Speed Racer and John Carter comparisons, maybe I need to check it out.
It. Was. AWESOME. I would definitely put it up there with Speed Racer and Avengers as purely bombastic cinematic fun. I have no idea why people are harshing the movie. It's definitely got that cheeky Pirates vibe to it. The horse, Silver, steals every scene he's in, being an alcoholic, tree climbing horse. And the finale of the film (yes, set to the William Tell Overture) is easily the greatest thing I've seen on the big screen this summer. After, IM3, Man of Steel, and to a lesser extent, Star Trek, I was sorely displeased with this year's offerings. But this film renewed my joy.
I highly recommend you go and enjoy the shit out of this movie.
"No Tom Foolery today, Ron. I'm tired of looking at your dreadful, speckled mug."
"Why do you hurt me in this way, Harry?"
”It’s a grid system motherfucker. Eleven up and one over, you simple bitch.”
