Semi-related: its nuts how the card industry has seen a boom since the pandemic started.
There are a group of guys that wait around Target for the vendor to come in and restock the sports cards (I call them the card stalkers). It had gotten so bad the vendor has had to alter his route because these guys knew when and where he'd be. He also isn't allowed to converse with the card stalkers anymore. Crazy.

Also, a guy from the area pulled a one of a kind baseball card worth $50,000 a few months ago.

My Dad has a bunch of old cards from when he collected as a kid. He’s 81 now, so they’re probably worth something.
Since my thing was comics and not cards, I never asked what they’re worth. And I don’t want to do it now, because that might seem suspiciously like fishing to raid them after he’s gone.

He also had an impressive collection of 45 records from the 40s and 50s including like first pressing of early Elvis records and other notable singers. But his mom gave them all away when he was in the Army. He’s still salty about it.

On the 2010-2012 list, I’m only in the ‘D’s and I’ve already cataloged more books than the entire three years I was in Cedar Rapids. It’s weird to think I’ve accumulated the vast majority of my collection only in the last ten years.

I chose the DC Nu 52 stuff I accumulated between 2011-2016 to log next. The vast, vast majority of these books I purchased second hand at dealer shows for pennies because I refused to go along with DCs reboot plan on principle. That bit me in the ass in a few cases, because some of the holes in my NU52 runs are because those books are now a premium, like the first few issues of Batman for example.

The final total was an additional 3,512 books with a “value” of $12.464.

Some interesting tidbits;
Not counting variants, the most ‘valuable’ Nu52 book is Batwing 19, the first appearance of Luke Fox, at $60. Issue 20 is $18 where he suits up as Batwing. Thankfully, I have both of those.
Batman 1 is up there at $55. I need that one (*sigh). The other early issues are also in the $10-15 range.
Injustice 1. Based on the video game, so not sure if it “counts” as a Nu52 book, but it goes for $35.
Justice League Dark 1 is $30. I need that one.
Green Arrow 1 is $28 for some reason.
Detective 1 is $25.
Green Lantern 20 is $20, but that was a hefty $8 or 9 to begin with. Johns’ last GL issue was oversized.
New Suicide Squad 1 is $20 for some reason(Harley maybe?). Need that one.
Justice League 40 is the first appearance of Darkseid’s daughter Grail, going for $18. I need that one too.
Harley Quinn, the Deadpool of the DCU, 1 is $15.
Batman & Robin 1 is $14. Need that.

After that, most books are $10 or below and mostly cover price. All told, I’m probably missing 100 issues from ALL the Nu52 series that launched in 2011 and beyond before they “fixed” their continuity again with Rebirth. And now I have a better idea why I’m missing some of those.

The next big batch I’ll be entering is the back issues I accumulated between 2013 and 2015. This might get put on the back burner, since I have “house” stuff to do for the next month. And also packing and other shit. But I’ll keep plugging away at it.

Well, I banged that 2013-2015 list out quicker than I thought. I’ve been staying up binging old episodes of Star Trek:TNG the past few weeks, and logging books while doing so.
Added an additional 6,045 books and a “value” of just over $25k. I put the value in quotes, because apart from a few key issues, the ones that are cover price aren’t really cover price. They’re all quarter bin and dollar box fodder. But it looks more impressive when you inflate their value!

Only two batches to go. The batch of books I was buying every Wednesday new as they came out between 2012(ish) up until Secret Wars in 2015.
And the batch of older books I got at dealer shows between 2016-2018.
Then I will be caught up to where I was on cbdb before they fucked off.
Will I get it done before the move? Probably not. Oh, and there’s another dealer show tomorrow(actually its in about five hours because I’m not smart and stay awake until 5:00 AM.) so more books to add to the (not) reading list.

I still have everything after Secret Wars up until present to sort, write down, and then add, and everything I’ve bought at dealer shows from the past three years. All of that is an additonal 30 or so long boxes...my girlfriend is going to be so delighted when all of the boxes are out of the living room and the bedroom. She’s gonna have so much extra room for activities!!

Finished!!*

Dec 18th to March 21st. Finished the final batch of book last night/this morning. An additional 4,333 books ‘valued’ at $18k.
Nothing really memorable in this batch except
Marvel Spotlight 9. Spotlight on Captain Universe.
Sentry 1 variant. First appearance of Sentry.
Spider-Man Noir 1. First Spider-Man Noir.

Final tally 56,494 (so far). If i divide that by 300-400 books per box, I get an estimate of 140-180 some long boxes.
After I move into the house, I have to add all the stuff I’ve bought in the last four years(its another 40ish boxes). THEN, after that, I’m gonna start the long arduous process of combining the different collections(one at my parent's house, a couple in storage, the books here at the apartment) into one master collection and hopefully condense it down some.

And then maybe I can catch up in my reading in earnest.

*During this final batch, I discovered I’m missing a short box somewhere that never got logged. I know it contains some Ultimate books, and I suspect some Transformers books as well. It’s a mystery that will be solved in time.

Thanks be to DrawerBoxes. Stacked up, 40 boxes take up about the equivalent space of a couch. And the entire basement(which is a finished basement thankfully) is mine to play with except for the laundry room.
