They did if you count the porn magazine and the porn website the boys were looking at.

I went to Stardust this weekend. Pleasantly surprised. People were comparing it to Princess Bride, though I don't know if it's reached THAT level of excellence, it was entertaining and whimsical. There was enough off-kilter stuff in it ( the seven dead brothers, DeNiro as a fey pirate, etc) to keep me chuckling.
And I haven't seen in this in forever, but I was thinking about the little gem from the 80's The Manhattan Project with John Lithgow. About the kid who steals the uranium and builds his own Nuke. I always liked how he broke into the base and then the whole trial and error process of him building the thing. Cool little movie from the past. And Cynthia Nixon from Sex and the City is in it. I think it was the last time she was actually hot.
71.

I've actually never seen it, fraud.
I saw Curious George the other night. No shit. You want a textbook case of "trying too hard"? They totally changed pretty much everything about the book, aside from George being a monkey. There's a weird mix of 3D and 2D animation, especially when an inventor with robot animals shows up for no real reason. Some good animation, and some of the worst pixellization I've ever seen. I wouldn't recommend it, unless you have very small kids. Even then, it's a little bit of a chore.
Oh, and the kickass Jack Johnson soundtrack? In the movie, it's only two or three songs repeated ad nauseum. Too bad, especially when combined with the massive changes. I would've killed to see George smoking a pipe to the tune of "We Are Going to Be Friends."

I recently watched Bad Santa for the first time (technically, it was Badder Santa). Pretty fuckin' funny. Plus, the girl I saw it with is fuckin' hot. So there.

Oh yeah? Did you get some somethin'-somethin', or excuse yourself to the bathroom for a quick snack?
(You do know I wouldn't have said anything had you not added the "so there," right?)

I got a whole lot of nothin'-nothin'. But give it time, my good man. Give it time.
The "so there" was just a way of saying that the overall movie-watching experience was a good one.

I figured that, but on the internet, without the benefit of tone of voice, it could've been a pompous comment. Kinda like "I watched Gilmour Girls, but then I fucked Natalie Portman. So there!"

Code: Select all
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. This movie is a western in the way that The Thin Red Line was a war movie. It's a very paced movie. One would call it slow if one were an impatient person. What makes it an above average film is Brad Pitt as Jesse James, and in a truly astounding performance, Casey Affleck as Ford. The man is mesmerizing in his portrayal. I smell an Oscar nom.
Gone Baby Gone. A truly impressive directing debut from Ben Affleck. I scoffed as well when I read he had directed a movie and cast his brother in the lead, but this is very well crafted film with impressive performances, particularly from Ed Harris. There are no stereotypes in this film, just people. And a morally ambiguous resolution that will have you discussing and debating long after the credits roll.
In The Valley of Elah. My choice ( so far) for Picture of the Year. Tommy Lee Jones is impeccable as the father of a Iraqi soldier trying to find out how his son died AFTER he gets back to his stateside base. The answers and their implications make this a truly remarkable film.
Elizabeth:Golden Age. A decent sequel to the original. Cate Blanchett plays the Queen as more catty and jealous and less reserved inner struggle than she did in the first film. The always charismatic Clive Owen lends a hand as Sir Walter Raleigh.

Scoop: Probably one of Woody Allen's better recent films. Scratch that, it's the best. Even my wife loved it, and she hates Woody Allen.
It's got Wolverine, Scarlet Johanssen, Al Swearengen, and that guy who won the Oscar that beat Star Wars in 1977.
Watch it.

30 Days Of Night. Mediocre, predictable vampire movie. Great idea seed, lousy execution.
Dan In Real Life. Decent Steve Carell vehicle. He didn't have to be over the top obnoxious in this one and it worked pretty well.

I thought it was funny how all the ads for 30 Days of Night kept going on about "a bold new vision of the vampire." Okay, you put them in Alaska. That's marginally clever. Other than that, the same stupid vampire bullshit we've seen for years.
Fuck Anne Rice and her pussy vampires. Fuck anyone who thinks it's sexy to be a vampire. Fuck everything done with vampires in the past century. Except for The Lost Boys and the cool-ass John Williams music from the shitty 1970s Dracula movie. Let's go back to when it was just Dracula and Carmilla and a lot of scary folk stories. Fuck everything since.
