Underrated comics

Post by anarky »

Title says it all, a thread for everyone to mention comics that didn't get much buzz, but were great reads.

Since this was inspired by discussion in the MU thread, I'll start with
SLEEPWALKER:

A young man is haunted by a weird-ass green alien who is invading his dreams. It appears at random times, and vanishes after doing something with a crystal it keeps around its neck. During one lucid dream, Rick grabs the crystal away from the creature, hoping this will eliminate the nightmares.

Bad idea. It turns out this alien was a member of a sort of mental-plane police force called the Sleepwalkers. He'd been tricked by a villain called Cobweb into venturing into Rick's mind, and--now that Rick has inadvertently separated him from the crystal that allows him to travel through thoughts--is now trapped.

On the plus side, when Rick sleeps, Sleepwalker finds himself in the real world. Being a do-gooder cop by nature, he starts fighting supervillains. And he finds some really, really crazy ones. Think 1950s Batman Rogues Gallery, only sillier.

Surprisingly, the goofy villains and episodic nature of the storytelling work amazingly well. Bob Budiansky reaches a level of writing that he didn't even hint at on Transformers. And the artwork, initially by Brett Blevins, is abstract enough for a comic about a creature from the world of dreams, yet cartoony enough to match the simplicity of the storytelling.

Later issues got away from the original premise of the series, when Sleepwalker discovered that, unbeknownst to him, the other Sleepwalkers were planning an invasion of Earth and the story went more to multi-issue arcs focused on this, and the series was cancelled shortly afterwards.

For those who are asking, "Dude, what's the big deal? This guy never did anything," well, he played a pretty significant role in the Infinity Gauntlet series. Significant as in "everybody on Earth would be dead if not for him."

Here's a cover of Sleepy in his inevitable showdown with Nightmare, by a future Marvel EIC who should've stuck to drawing the pretty pictures:

What, no one else loved (or loves) a title that doesn't get the acclaim it's due?

I just ordered a complete run of Nth Man, including the MCP first appearance and the guest appearance in Excalibur. I've always wanted to read this one. I'll let you know once I get it if it's worth everyone else checking out.

I'm assuming that, since it's Hama and ninjas, the answer is yes.

Then I guess I'm out about $25. Which for 18 comics, including shipping, isn't too bad.

I think we've had this conversation before. Nth Man is TOO zen for a comic book. Hama really delved into the mysticism of Ninja, but it got to the point where John Doe could cross his eyes and disarm a nuclear warhead. Or he would dispatch a roomful of guards so fast he would be standing in the same place one panel later and all the guards would be on the floor. That's not exactly how it went down, but that's the image I get when thinking about it. You say ninja comic, I want a mysterious guy in a mask kung-fuing the shit out of everybody and then dissappearing right in front of them. Not a barechested long haired guy who can set his fingers in a certain pattern and give some dude a heart attack 100 yards away.

The Green Goblin series about some poor teenager who found the Goblin stuff and was using it to be a hero was very good. I think it went about 14 issues.

One of my all-time favorites that gets no play is Leave it to Chance - picture a 13yr old female Harry Potter, complete with a pet dragon (and, in case you didn't know - I LOVE Lockheed) AND it's got art by Paul Smith AND it's suitable for all ages.

The Deathlok relaunch from the 90's. Pacifist engineer Michael Collins is working on what he thinks is a medical robotics research project, but is in fact a military super soldier experiment. When he finds out the truth, he threatens to blow the whistle and gets himself killed and placed in the machine. The premise of a Pacifist with the power of a perfect killing machine was the ultimate irony. The book eventually got mired in trying to reconcile the original Deathlok character into the new series, producing continuity, time travelling headaches. But the original Prestige Series and first issues of the ongoing were wicked awesome.

God yes. I loved the Michael Collins Deathlok.

Since we're kinda on an early 90s kick, how about the early portion of Darkhawk? That was a rather good series. Kid finds an amulet (there was a sale on pictures of amulets going on at the deli across from Marvel's offices, apparently) that allows him to switch his physical body with an incredibly powerful robotic one. At first he thinks he's just transforming, but details on where the amulet came from and what it really does leak out very slowly over the first few years of the book. Oh, and did I mention, he doesn't know it at first, but the longer he stays in Darkhawk form, the more mentally fucked-up he becomes?

It's funny: everyone thinks of the 90s as a time of Image and nonexistent stories, compounded by variant covers and speculators. But, before they were abyssmally ruined, Sleepwalker, (Michael Collins) Deathlok, Darkhawk, and (Dan Ketch) Ghost Rider were some incredibly well-crafted books. I still think Dan's story would've been better for the GR movie than Johnny's. The whole "everyone thinks I'm this Zarathos character, and wants to kill me--including the old Ghost Rider" would've added a cool element of mystery to a film that desperately needed some not sucking.

!mpact Comics. DC's attempted revival of the Archie/Red Circle heroes. The Shield, The Jaguar, The Web, The Fly, The Comet, and The Hood. I remember not liking the Web very much, it was a poor man's SHIELD. Jaguar was alright. The Shield and the Comet were even better. The Comet went all goofy at the end with the alien body switcheroo thing. I liked the Hood, especially the way they introduced him in the other books, only to kill him off in his first issue, and make him the kid. But the best was the Fly. And In searching wikipedia, I just learned that Mike Parobeck died of diabetes in 1996. Well, that just sucks. :(

Malibu's Ultraverse, before Marvel came in and torpedoed it was pretty good. Prime was especially entertaining.

Impact was pretty cool, for the most part. I was actually thinking of that the other day. I've got some original pages from Crucible by Chuck Wotjieciwicz (I know I butchered his name, but it's a tough one, and I'm too lazy to look him up). I got them from one of the old conventions in Roanoke, back when he was a talented no-name just signed to a DC book, like Mike Wieringo. I'm surprised he never became a bigger deal. Of that bunch, Ringo became something of a god among men, and even Casey Jones (then a kid with a bunch of cool sketches and no real work on his resume) has done some high-profile stuff. But Chuck W just sort of vanished.

Damage.

A kid gets the power to blow up stuff. Sounds generic, but it's one of the best "high school kid gets amazing powers and has to fight evil and save the universe and still deal with high school problems" since the early Spider-Man issues.

Oh, and, though it seems largely ignored now, he's responsible for the DC Universe existing. In Zero Hour, Parallax and Extant essentially destroyed the universe and Damage used his powers to create the biggest fucking explosion of his life--the Big Bang that formed the post-Zero Hour DCU.

Funny thing is, I remember being especially fond of this book, but I'm having a real tough time recalling specifics. Which is a bit weird for me.

God damn it smells obscure in here.

As far as underrated comics go, I think Maxx deserves more love. Back when I was really into comics a couple of years ago, I was reading some of the issues and was impressed by the artwork. I also vaguely remember the animated series on MTV a loooooong time ago.
