i've decided to move this to the new rants/raves forum, since it's basically the thread that mirrors my rant about IE...

yeah, so just for all you heathens that didn't think you had a choice but to use microsoft internet explorer since netscape sucks just SO much... check out mozilla! and while you're at it, use the new browser they're developing - mozilla firebird.

How would you even come across something like that, Vyn? And what do you do -dump everything and start fresh with the new OS?

well, i've known about mozilla for a while, and recently i got attacked by a virus known as "trojan.ghosts" which takes advantage of a HUGE security hole in IE, so after fixing that mess, i was looking for a different browser. i've used netscape in the past, but their implementation and rendering of HTML is laxadaisical to say the least... so i checked out the mozilla site, and got their two newest browsers. mozilla is actually linked to netscape, and automatically imports your bookmarks, plugins and settings. firebird is more stand-alone, but if you install it after mozilla, it will also import all your bookmarks.
i didn't dump anything - it's just a web browser, not a new OS or anything (although i would love to get a Mac and use OSX, or install linux on a pc or something...) i still have IE, netscape, and opera and just added mozilla and firebird. i just set firebird as my default browser.
i'm also using thunderbird, an email app that takes the place of outlook express, which also has it's huge security risks... you can easily import all your OE settings to thunderbird.
i also like their names! [ninja]

Yep, Thunderbird as a name totally rips. I think I'll change all my name tags at work to read "THUNDERBIRD" instead of REASON and see what comments I get.

Okay, Im actually here in Firebird this time. Im not really noticing any differences in the looks of the pages, however it seems to take longer for the pages to appear. Im willing to accept this if my security is better, but could you let me know if there's anything I can do to up the speed on this thing?

well, i've gotten to the point where i can make a design that renders almost identically in every browser (except for opera, which doesn't support a lot of the things i've done with this site...)
most likely the slow-down is due to the fact that it's the first time you're doing everything with the browser. IE is faster right now, because it is taking everything from you cache files (stuff stored on your own machine) whereas you haven't gathered any cache files for firebird yet. after that's all done, i didn't find too much of a difference in speed. the only thing that would slow down a page load is the fact that IE renders using ActiveX which is part of windows (of course...) whereas mo and firebird use their rendering engine, gecko...

Thanks, Vyn. Im still using it for security reasons, and have been pretty happy. I think the pages take about the same time to appear, it just brings them up differently or something. Good call. Is the email program worth downloading (it's 7 more megs, bigger than the browser!)?

Okay, just wanted to mention, Vyn, that I'm running Firefox now - and what a HUGE difference I've noticed with page load times. My IE was sucking so bad - I couldn't even get my hotmail to work anymore. On SSG, if I tried to reply to a PM it would stall and stop loading, requiring me to disconnect-reconnect to the net and refresh. I haven't had ONE instance of this since I changed back over to Mozilla.
Very, very pleased with this browser.

Firefox rocks nuts. I haven't gotten any popups other than the normal porn browsing ones but those are alright cuz they take me on another tangent. I love the bird.

Nice to see you're down with the "Dark Side" of the web, Slicker. Check out Freeones.com - it's the jumping off point for many of my wanks.

just as an illustration of how cool a website i can make, and then have IE <b>TOTALLY</b> fuck it up, look at the new "theme" i have added to the site proper, at
http://www.vynsane.com - firefox renders the other two better than IE does, but IE completely chokes on the new theme "industrial" - just click on the link that says "industrial" using IE and you'll see what i mean.
IE chokes. HARD. like a kid trying to commit sepuku with a frisbee hard. once again proving my point: IE sucks.

They looked exactly the same to me Vyn. What's the difference because I'm computer stupid so I may have missed a detail?
