Got a new HDTV

Finally I got one. Something else didnt come up in which I needed to spend my money on.

I went to WM to get a 32" Vizio Tv. It was $448, but they were sold out. I was a bit bummed as it is 1080p and most of the 720p TV's were around the same price. I walked down one of the aisles and they had the display model of the TV I wanted discounted to $358. I am really skeptical about floor model stuff, but right at 100 bucks is a nice chunk off. Well turned out they let me get the 2 year extended warranty with it for only 29 bucks, so I got it. It ended up costing me less that way than a brand new one. I cant complain.

I got a 32" 720p Magnavox a couple of months ago for around $330 on sale at Target.
I don't have any HD programming (which doesn't really matter to me), but I love this tv, especially for DVDs.

I've considered getting an HDMI cable for the DVD player, which is supposed to upconvert DVDs to full 1080i HD, but I'm calling bullshit on that. It may make DVDs look better, but I find it too hard to believe it can make them look a full 1080i. Besides, DVDs look great on the new tv as it is.

For me, the HD programming on TV is awesome... not because it's in HD, though that's cool, but because it allows me to get both east coast and west coast feeds of several channels.

When I moved into my apartment I bought the biggest TV they had at the Exchange (literally) and it brings me to tears how awesome it is. I've also got an HD-DVD player with the HDMI cable. I haven't tried switching between a normal cable and the HDMI but since I'm not much of a techie it doesn't much matter either way.

BTW, the very first thing I watched when I got my TV? The opening of ROTS.

Diabolical, it doesnt matter as your TV wont output 1080, its a max of 720, so upconverting DVD players wont mean shit for you.

I have some HD programming, but I wont pay extra for the package of it since they dont carry my favorite channel, BBC America in HD on dish. Once they do, I will get it. I do get the locals, which I am watching Football now and its fuckin beautiful, Movie channels and PPV channels.

I watched a few episodes of Clone Wars on DVD on the new tv, which looked great, but I still haven't thrown a real Star Wars flick in yet.
I did watch Star Trek though, which also looked great.

Yeah, I know I can't get the full 1080 - but the DVD player says it has the capability (on a 1080 tv) with the HDMI cable (which I doubt it can).
So does that mean a standard DVD is 720? Or would the HDMI cable upconvert to 720?

For a DVD the maximum resolution 720x480 while Blu-ray is 1,920x1,080 you know the whole 1080p deal. Your 720p TV like mine only does a max of 1280x720. The up converting DVD player, well most will let you "scale" which is what they should call it rather than "up convert" to that same 720p resolution, typically if a player outputs 1080p etc is will do the lower resolutions as well. Honestly you really shouldnt notice that much of a difference depending on the TV. Since you're TV handles the video processing to "scale" the image to that native 1280x720 resolution. This isnt always the case so some DVD players or DVD up converters have better video processing capabilities so in that case the image might look slightly better. Will it be HD-DVD or Bluray qualify, yeah thats like going back to the pissing into a Mr. Coffee and getting Folders choice joke.

Bad comparison. If you piss in a Mr Coffee, the result will be a fuckload better than Folger's.

Does it have a remote or do you have to get off the couch to turn the knob?

Do you have your kids adjust rabbit ears also?

yeah, you have to crank it to get it started, and then it's only got enough power for twenty minutes. i keep my buggy whips and stove-pipe hat next to it. it's also large enough to put a nice candelabra on top, which lights up the living room rather nicely.

Is it one of those fancy floor models? Those are classy.

Especially if they have that oak veneer cabinet. I remember when I was a kid, my grandparents had at cabinet tv that sat on the floor. On either side of the screen, there was a cabinet. You could open the top of one side and there was a record player and the other side had a radio. It was sort of like this, but it looked nicer.
