Found some old X-Men first appearances

Post by Diabolical »

Digging through some old comic boxes earlier and found some X-Men first appearances I forgot I had.

Uncanny X-Men #201 - Nathan "Cable" Summers (as a baby)

Uncanny X-Men #244 - Jubilee.

X-Men Annual #14 - Gambit (which predates Uncanny X-Men #266)

New Mutants Annual #2 - Betsy "Psylocke" Braddock (First American comics appearance)

Cool find! I have all those issues.

I remember that X-Men Annual,it was part of the Days of Future Present mini crossover in some of the annuals that year. Gambit and prepubescent Storm were trying to break into the mansion and the only people living there were Cable's New Mutants team.

Yep, that's it.
I actually had to look it up because I couldn't remember why it was special. Somehow, that bit of info had been pushed out of my mind for some other useless info.
Due to a "* see issues..." I did notice that chronologically it takes places after issues #265-267, but this issue was released a few weeks before #266, technically making it Gambit's first appearance.

People talk about the death of the though balloon in comics, but nobody mentions the death of the asterisk.

I think I have. :)

I know I've mentioned the old "editor's notes" that cross-reference when things happened didn't bog me or my friends down in the continuity; it gave us a road map to which issues to track down next.

I've got a feeling jubilee appeared before 244.... isn't 244 the first Jim Lee?

Looked it up - 244 is her first appearance, my bad. Silvestri art. First Jim Lee was 248.

Thought balloons have just been replaced with DKR-style Caption Boxes of many hues.

I,too, miss asterisked Editor's Boxes. Especially with the prevalence of ContinuityPorn based storytelling in today's comics, they would be a godsend. For awhile they were doing a little box on the letters page with a list of all the references for that issue, but that stopped after about a year.

I am glad they do the first page story recap with the listing of the creative team, especially when a book is really late so I don't have to go back through the last few issues to refresh my memory.

And that goes double for Daredevil since it has pretty much been one continuous story since before I started reading it.
