Bryan Singer: Why the hate?
I'm really baffled by this, as it goes way beyond the "geeks hate everything" cliche.
If Singer's name comes up on the internet, there are immediately seven thousand responses that go on and on about how horrible he is, how he's such an awful director, how his movies all suck, how his X-Men movies sucked in particular. Uwe Boll doesn't get as much hate as Singer does.
What the fuck is the deal? Yeah, some people (granted, a lot) were disappointed by Superman Returns. How the hell does making one movie you didn't like (and even if you didn't like it, it's tough to argue that Superman Returns is objectively a bad film) override everything else the guy's done?
And how the fuck did fandom go from thinking correctly that the first two X-Men movies were two of the best comic book superhero movies to thinking they're awful piles of crap? Rogue was a few years younger. Big fucking deal.
I haven't seen every single movie he did. But Apt Pupil, The Usual Suspects, Valkyrie? You're going to argue that a guy is a talentless hack the likes of which Michael Bay only dreams of being, when he made those three movies--in addition to the only two X-Men movies that were truly worthy of the name (and writing and producing the only other one that's even watchable)? It's not like he's M. Knight Shamalamadingdong, starting strong and burning out almost immediately.
I dunno. This is a lot of "ink" for this rant, but I can't fathom it. It goes well beyond normal nerd rage and is largely unjustified.

Re: Bryan Singer: Why the hate?
i think the problem with singer is that, when he's on he's ON (Usual Suspects, X-Men, X2, X-Men: First Class) and when he's off he's really off (Superman Returns).
also, part of the backlash is that he jumped off the X-Men train before the third movie to make SR and therefore we ended up with two shitty superhero movies.

Life is short. STUNT IT!

Re: Bryan Singer: Why the hate?
I don't get the hate either.
IMO, his only real misfire was Jack the Giant Slayer. Just a lifeless snore of a movie.
Superman Returns wasn't terrible, it just wasn't great. I recently heard someone say SR is basically a movie of really cool moments (like plane crash scene) and I agree. It's too much of a love letter to the Donner films rather than being the next entry.
People (AKA the internet) wanted a Superman movie where Superman punches the shit out bad guys. They got it in Man of Steel and they still weren't happy. That's the internet for you.
I want to know the bIZZARO question - Tim Burton: Why the love?

Re: Bryan Singer: Why the hate?
I can see Superman Returns not meeting expectations. Personally, I loved it--I love that he had the balls to tell a completely original story and not fuck with another origin retelling. But if you want an action-packed Superman movie, that's not it.
Saying it does not meet expectations as a Superman film, though, is miles from saying it's a bad film. It's not perfect, no. But to warrant shit like "kill this man if he goes near a camera again"? Fuck no.

Because he got a kid drunk and diddled his tushie.
That's why the hate.

I just came to the movie section to post in the Cap topic and saw this one and couldn't resist.

17 is legal in Hawaii, so even if it did happen (which seems a little sketchy that the guy would only come forward right before Singer's huge movie comes out), everyone going "OH MY GOD HE FUCKED A KID" is a little off base. Still creepy, but not AS creepy, I guess...
Shit. I can't think of a good signature.

Re: Bryan Singer: Why the hate?
I think I've mentioned this story before. At SDCC while he was shooting Superman Returns, he flew 18 hours to SanDiego to give a presentation in Hall H before turning around and flying straight back to Australia. But during the Q&A section this guy came up to the mic and said "Hi!" And Singer said "Hi!" And there was this long awkward pause for the other 6,000 of us in Hall H while these two guys mooned at each other for awhile. Then Singer realized what they were doing and recovered and asked for his question. It was pretty funny.
