Saw The Marvels today. It is a lot of fun.
Iman Vellani is just fun to watch - she's clearly having a blast.
It also felt heavily edited, leading to the 90 minute run time. I have a feeling most of what was cut was superfluous stuff and exposition that slowed the movie down.
The musical planet was highly unnecessary. Way too campy. There was no reason for it.
And the Flerkin infestation came out of nowhere, as if the writers couldn't figure out how to evacuate the ship, so they just threw this in. I expected a Tribble homage.
Why were only a handful of the Kree blue?
And the last scene and mid-credit scene were pretty fucking awesome.

Is it just me, or are they making this Johnathan Majors thing way more dramatic that it needs to be.
Just recast Kang. There are TONS of talented actors who could step into that role and literally nobody would flip out.
All this nonsense about hastily “pivoting” away from years worth of story prep and going with a different villain at the last moment seems like a ridiculously terrible decision.
David Oyelowo is Kang. Boom. Done.
John David Washington. Boom. Done.
John Boyega. Boom. Done.
Geoffrey Wright…
Or…wait for it.
Terrence Howard is Kang. Boom. Done.

I thought the guy that played The High Evolutionary on GotG3 could be retconned into a Kang variant.

Marvel is only releasing one movie this year. One.

Probably for the best.
While I've still generally enjoyed the last few movies, a bit of a break may be needed to refocus and bring in some cohesion.

Some eagle-eyed viewer noticed an issue of Secret Wars laying on the far left of the screen in that final shot of Wade laying on the ground.
I zoomed in. It’s the typeface logo of Hickman’s 2015 series.

Julia Garner, best known for playing Ruth Langmore on Ozark, is joining the FF movie as Shalla-Bal. But the MCU twist is that she’ll be the Silver Surfer instead of Norrin Radd.
I really enjoyed her performance on Ozark(which I still need to finish) so I don’t entirely mind they picked her to play SS. But I feel like one of the MCU problems is how they are straying further and further from source material(see Namor etc) and it’s backfiring with the fanbase.
You know people are gonna bitch endlessly about this.

Uh oh, it has a previously established female character from the comics - I guess that means it's "woke" now, right?

I am just a wee bit wistful that we probably won’t ever get a full feature film of a hippie Confucius type Norrin styling thru the cosmos to a Satriani fueled soundtrack.

Marvels was fucking great. I don't care how it performed; that movie was a damned blast.
I actually still haven't seen Loki 2, Secret Invasion, Echo, or half of What If...? 2. The perils of having family who want to watch everything, too, but can't agree on a time, and, when they do, there's something more pressing to watch first.
I don't think the female Silver Surfer is "woke," but I expected them to play FF as safe as possible after two botched attempts, and with their Midas touch seemingly gone. Long as the movie is good, I don't care if Silver Surfer is a jive-talking carrot with an eyepatch.
Not exactly MCU, but confirmed as part of the Multiverse this week: X-Men '97 is fucking incredible. Best TV project from Marvel yet. (And, confession, even I fucking hated Jubilee in the original, but she's more what the character should be in the continuation.) I should start a thread about it and not clutter this one with an only tangentially MCU-adjacent series.

You can skip Secret Invasion AND Echo.
You’ll only be let down.

Echo wasn't bad. Not very MCU though.

i liked Secret Invasion. haven't seen Echo or or Loki2. still haven't found time to watch The Marvels, either. i also didn't watch Ms. Marvel all the way through. do i need to? i'm basically in the same boat as anarky, too many things, not enough time that coincides. also the missus is kinda done with Marvel stuff.

You don’t need to watch Ms Marvel to enjoy Marvels. You get the gist of her character, relation to her family, etc pretty quick.
But her infectious enthusiasm in Marvels is on display throughout Ms Marvel, so you’ll enjoy it if you liked her in the movie.
