Comics You Didn't Even Know You Had... Or Thought You Did!

Post by jjreason »

One's great, the other blows goats. I just found copies of issues 1 and 2 of the Ennis Punisher MAX unlimited series, which makes me happy.

I also just realized I'm missing one issue of the Bendis Daredevil run as well as one issue of the first volume of Wolverine (that went to 187 or whatever, not the 4 issue miniseries).

I guess these balance out.

On my last trip to Iowa in June, I pulled the 10 boxes I had amassed between 2003 and 2006 when I started collecting again and inventoried them into my massive log of 66 long boxes from my first collecting stint from 1987-1995. I discovered that I did indeed have some holes that I was previously unaware of. I have yet to integrate the 18 long boxes I have amassed in the last two years since I moved to CA, but I'm fairly certain I have missed an issue or two there as well. I have written a list on small yellow legal pad paper (anarky is witness to this tattered dog eared list) that I shall soon be transferring to the memopad on my Blackberry so I will ALWAYS have it with me. On this list is pretty much every comic I DON'T have.

What I need to do and keep procrastinating is to get some archival software and enter in all 28,000 issues (and counting). That sounds daunting and explains the procrastination. That, and the fact that when I begin said archiving process, I will be stopping and reading every other book and will never, ever finish.

I thought I had Amazing Turdeto #152, the first appearance of the Butt Spelunker in continuity (and not on the Turdeto radio program from the 50's) but it was just a reprint. :?

I've been hunting like crazy to find a Birds of Prey miniseries called Manhunt that came out before their first ongoing. Which is to say, I've been hunting for issues under a buck. If I wanted to pay $3-4 an issue I could find it easy. But I was looking thru a box of comics my ex-gfs sister gave me when she moved to New York, and the entire series is sitting in there. I've had it for two years and didn't remember.

Conversely, I thought I had the early Black Widow Marvel Knights miniseries. Well, I thought there was two, one of them being the Blonde BW chick's MAX series. Turns out there were THREE three issue minis back then, and I only had one of them. SO I remedied that on ebay over the weekend and got all three series (9 issues) for $3.

I don’t have a lot of the Pre-Crisis DC ongoings on my want list(Superman, Batman, WW, etc) because it’s not likely I’m ever going to stumble across random issues from the 40s and 50s in $1 boxes at comic shows. So my run of the ‘original’ Superman series pretty much started with Moore’s farewell issue ‘Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?’ in issue 423 and then the title switched over to ‘Adventures of Superman’ with issue 424. I have a complete run from 424 up until the book got cancelled with issue 714 for Nu52.

But I was looking at the issues right before 423 on cbrealm, and the covers looked familiar. So I went and looked in a box of stuff I bought like 4-5 years ago, and found a run of Superman from issue 398-422 I had picked up and forgot about.

This one’s in the ‘Or thought you did!’ half of the topic.

There was a two issue Prestige series Birds of Prey/Catwoman from 2003. The first issue was a “flashback” where Catwoman faced off/teamed up with Batgirl, and the second issue was in the present where Catwoman teams up with Oracle. Thought I had the full series, but according to my records, I’m missing the first one. A physical trip to the “archives” in the basement confirms I don’t have it.

On the want list it goes!
