Here’s the next ‘B’ books.

Bishop:War College 1-5. Set during the Krakoa era, Bishop has been tasked with training young X-Men and some wannabe newbie characters to be Krakoa’s first(or last, or next)line of defense. When the Fenris twins lead a secret contingent of Orchis operatives onto the island to break into the Pit and free Sabertooth and the other prisoners(not realizing they were already gone). Bishop and Tempo get knocked into another dimension where all the X-Men are black(don’t ask) and the students have to defend the island without them. There’s never any character development when I read Bishop series, and this Krakoa miniseries seemed even more pointless than the rest. Plus, the ‘metaphor’ of the all-black X-Men(like Professor X, Scott, Jean, Beast, etc were all african american) was a little too heavy handed. Bleh.

Black Adam 1-12(I’m missing 9 thru 11). Chris Priest wrote this maxiseries set around the time he joined the Justice League and before they all disappeared prior to Dark Crisis. When Black Adam was dispelled by the Wizard Shazam thousand of years ago, he flew thru sentient space dust which read his mind and manifested as an ancient pantheon of Egyptian Gods. In the present, the alien space dust is causing hallucinations and has infected Adam. Before he dies, he passes his powers onto a distant descendant, an American medical student living in Washington DC. I’m missing the end of the series, except for the final issue, where Theo Adam is physically separated from his supervillain/hero alter ego Black Adam. Theo goes on to live a ‘normal’ life and Adam continues on as the leader of Khandaq. This synopsis sounds dopey as fuck, but Priest always delivers solid stories peppered with social commentary.

Black Canary:Best of the Best 1-6. Tom King wrote this mini about Black Canary and Lady Shiva in worldwide televised fight from Las Vegas for the title of greatest hand-to-hand combatant in the world. Each issue covers one round of the match interspersed with flashbacks of Canary’s training for the event with her mom. The original BC has cancer and Vandal Savage has offered to cure her if Dinah throws the fight in the sixth round. I won’t ruin the ending. I like Tom King. This isn’t his best work, but even his less than best is better than most other’s writing.

Black Cat 4. Jed MacKay wrote a Black Cat series that took a short hiatus and relaunched with a second series that opened with a three issue King in Black tie in. I read them back in 2022. This issue was a stand alone that followed an amnesiac Lily Hollister in her new identity as a ‘hero’ called Queen Cat. She decides she needs a nemesis and picks Black Cat. Felicia is very supportive of Lily wanting to be her archfoe.

BC 5-7. The big heist that the entire first series was setting up arrives. Black Cat and Black Fox are breaking into the NYC Thieves Guild’s pocket dimension vaults, but Fox double crosses Cat to make a deal with an ancient being for immortality in exchange for the island of Manhattan. Cat has to work with her frenemy Odessa Drake to double double cross Fox and save Manhattan, even if it means banishing her mentor to the vault forever. I feel like the build up to this “heist” in the first series didn’t pay off.

Black Cat Annual 1. Felicia is detained in Seoul, Korea by Amy Han, the White Fox and pressed into service with the newly formed Tiger Division to stop a psychically compromised Taekugi. This was the first appearance of Tiger Division.

BC 8-10 + Infinity Heist oneshot. The series wrapped up with Felicia recruiting three of the newly anointed Infinity Stone bearers; Star, Quantum, and Overtime, to stay one step ahead of Nick Fury and help Star use her reality warping powers to cure Felicia’s mom of cancer. I think the series was getting cancelled and MacKay had to abruptly finish his run.

Black Cat 1-6. The current ongoing by G. Willow Wilson has Felicia starting to break the fourth wall(don’t like that). The hook for the new series is that criminals are disrupting the ‘natural order’ and making it difficult for Felicia to commit burglaries, so she decides to become a hero and starts fighting crime. She get bamboozled by Tombstone into breaking into a save house full of laundered money. And she has to deal with a bunch of vampires who summon her to a vampire court for interrupting a Vampire’s business interests. Guest starred Daredevil, Mary Jane and J Jonah so far. It’s been okay, except for her narrating directly to the reader.

Black Knight: Curse of the Ebony Blade 2-5. Dane Whitman faces off against Mordred to find other Ebony objects made from the same meteor as the Blade. Dane reveals he has a daughter and she carries on his legacy as the new Black Knight. Wasn’t great. Wasn’t bad.

Up next, this week’s books. And then more Black books; Lighting, Manta, Panther, and Widow.

Just in time for this week’s book, here are last week’s(2/4/26) books.

Absolute Superman 16. Absolute Hawkman shows up to explain to Kal how ‘real heroes’ work in this world run by the evil mega-corporations like Lazarus. Kal keeps interrupting him to go save people. When Hawk feels disrespected, the conversation escalates into a fight. Meanwhile, Brainiac goes to recruit an everyman Lex Luthor living in Missouri. When Lex politely declines, Brainiac starts killing everyone at Lex’s birthday party.

Absolute Green Lantern 11. Hal wakes up from his coma, just in time for Hector Hammond to attack in a giant mech suit. He knocks a building down on Simon Baz’s FBI partner while she was examining Jo’s power ring, so Jo is powerless against Hector’s attack. Meanwhile, John and Guy are “inside” the Lantern in their new avatar red and yellow personas, finally meet the Tomar-Re, and he is NOT happy.

Amazing Spidey 21.
Avengers 35.
Batgirl 16.

Batman 6. Bruce confronts Damian about carelessly compromising his identity last issue(the doctor did not make the connection that Bruce is Batman, only that he’s Robin’s father). Later, Batman fights some Hugo Strange’s Monster Men. The issue concludes with Tim telling Bruce he’s stepping away from crimefighting. Bruce gives him his blessing, but Damian feels like Tim is a traitor for quitting. Matt Fraction is killing it with this new series.

DC KO Boss Battle oneshot. Since the surviving tournament members haven’t built up enough “omega energy” to defeat the next round, so the World Forger freezes time and sends the four remaining victors(Superman, Lex, Joker, and WW) as well as some resurrected challengers(Black Lighting, Plastic Man, Batwoman, Star Sapphire) to an alternate battlefield where they face off against licensed characters; SubZero and Scorpion from MK, Red Sonja, the Annabelle doll, Vampirella, some lesbian lumberjack teddy bear person, Homelander from the Boys(the TV series version), and Sabrina the Teenage Witch from Archie comics. The DC characters build up enough energy from the wins to face Round 4 in the next issue.

DC KO Knightfight 4. Bruce finds himself in a reality where Damian’s Batman has solved crime in Gotham and all the Bat Family are living happy lives. Brice gets to meet hos grandson, Alfred. And he doesn’t want to leave, but he knows this is just another challenge by the Heart of Apokalips, so he has his entire family help him train to defeat Damian. He is defeated in the battle, but everything he’s done has been preparation to take on the Heart when he returns to the “present”.

Planet of the Apes vs Fantastic Four 1. The FF find themselves powerless on the Apes world, and on trial for heresy. Then four of the Apes begin exhibiting the FF’s powers.

Godzilla:Infinity Roar 1. The sequel to G Destroys the MU has Godzilla out in space and sporting a symbiote from Knull. He attacks the Wakandan Homeworld and shrugs off a scream by BlackBolt, then sets his sites on Asgard. The FF try and recruit Galactus for help with the unstoppable kaiju.

Magik and Colossus 1. Illyana does a welfare check on her brother, who’s been moping since Krakoa, when his brother took over his mind and made him kill his girlfriend and used him as a spy. Then Poitr had to kill his brother. So he’s not in a good headspace. But then some Russian FairyTale characters are attacking farmers near their old home, so the siblings have to step up amd fight them.

Nova Centurion 4. Nova pays for a full recharge. Eden Rixlo steals Nova’s ship with his shipmates still on board. Nova tracks the ship to who hired Rixlo to steal the ship; Peter Quill, the new Emperor of the Spartax Empire. He and Nova aren’t on good terms since Quill sided with the liars covering up what happened with the Inhumans in Imperial.

Sonic the Hedgehog 84.

Part 2, coming up…

2/4’s part II

Spider-Gwen 7. Gwen makes it official and starts calling Fabian her boyfriend. Then a fundraiser her dad is attending gets attacked by masked gunman, so she and Fabian show up in costume to stop. In an ‘homage’ to ASM 121, she accidentally snaps the neck of a gunman that gets pushed out the window, but it might all be a plot by Mysterio who shows up on the last page.

Spirits of Violence 5. The series concludes with Marvel doing Dan Ketch dirty once more by killing him off. He sacrifices himself to stop his sister Barbara, so the rest of the Ghost Riders can banish Corruption from entering our realm. What a turd Ghost Rider series with a rotten ending.

Storm 1. Ayodele continues her brilliant run on this book. After Storm refuses to aid an elder god who was on the losing side of the storm war commit ritual suicide, he sends his acolytes to start causing calamities on Earth.

Superman:Chains of Love oneshot. Creeper and Livewire find love after she gets released from prison and they start a podcast together.

Thundarr the Barbarian 1. A new series from Jason Aaron from Dynamite. I fondly remembered watching the cartoon, so I picked it up to see what’s what. It was decent, but I probably won’t continue getting it.

Ultimate Wolverine 14. Logan and Jean Grey continue to hunt Magik, who is hiding out in Limbo. Logan comes across a unit of loyalist soldiers led by Lady Deathstrike and fucks them all up.

Ultimate Endgame 2. Howard Stark, calling himself Immortus, has been inside the Maker’s dome for thousands of years fighting an endless battle against the Maker, who has incorporated himself into the very fabric of the city. Howard sacrifices himself to protect the Immortus Engine from the Maker, but Maker has a secret weapon, Doom(Reed Richards) has been working for him the entire time. Betrayal!

Wolverine 15. Wolverine and Silver Sable are protecting a village of mutants who are keeping to themselves. But the Canadian govt can’t abide that, and send Alpha Flight to “relocate” them.

Logan:Black White & Blood 2. In 1919, Logan discovers Kentucky Bourbon for the first time. In the 1930’s Logan deals with pirates trafficking refugees from Madripoor to America, and in the “recent past” Logan and his CIA partner Carol Danvers stumble upon a secret Skrull invasion infiltrating the world’s governments.

Uncanny X-Men 23. The rest of the team convenes an intervention for Gambit, who’s beginning to be influenced by his Eye of Aggamato that he took from the giant dragon way back in the first issue. He resists and attacks the other X-Men, but they are interrupted by the Legion of Monsters, who’ve shown up deciding they want New Orleans as new monster mecca.

Up next. Hmmm. I might just read 2/11’s books before diving back into the ‘B’ stuff again.

2/11’s books.

Absolute Wonder Woman Annual 1. Having used Medusa’s powers to defeat the leviathan in the first arc, Diana realizes the burden of Medusa’s curse and beseeches Athena to allow Diana to try and lift the curse. But she must do so without her powers.

Amazing Spider-Man:Torn 5.
Batman & Robin 30.

Black Cat 7. Venom team up! Mary Jane enlists Felicia’s help to retrieve an embarrassing audition tape that a blackmailer is keeping in a secret vault in the Negative Zone. That threadbare plot hole is just an excuse for Best Frenemies MJ and Cat to fight Negative Zone monsters.

Alien vs Capt America 4.
Cyclops 1. Scott returns to watch the demolition of the orphanage where he was raised. On the way back home, his jet is shot out of the sky by Reavers. The crash damages his visor, so he has to help a young mutant escape the Reavers while being completely blind. A solid start from writer Alex Paknadel.

DC KO 4. Batman returns from the Knightfight series to take out Joker, who switched sides and started playing for Team Darkseid. Superman punches Booster/Darkseid so hard, it frees his hold over the Absolute Trinity. Together the combined heroes attack Darkseid, but they fall one by one, until only Lex and Superman are left. Then Lex shoots Superman in the back and moves on to the final battle.

Wade Wilson:Deadpool 1. A new series begins with Wade taking more and more dangerous jobs because of something bad that happened to his daughter. Then he gets a magic piece of paper that foretells upcoming plot points in the book, allowing his to save potential victims before calamity befalls them.

GIJoe:ARAH 325. Darklonia is invading Borovia and a contingent of Joes is on hand as ‘observers’. In a clear analogy of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Borovians engage in a battle of drones and snipers with the Darklonian forces.

Sirens:Love Hurts 1. A Black Label Gotham City Sirens mini with ‘f’words and salacious girl talk, Black Canary reluctantly teams up with Harley, Ivy, and Selina to investigate serial killings of young women in Gotham.

Marc Spector:Moon Knight 1. Jed MacKay starts the fifth MK series in his ongoing saga. A european crime syndicate has enlisted Mr. Fear to imprison a brainwashed Marc in a controlled emviroment in order to get him to reveal his old ally Frenchie DuChamp’s location. Zodiac shows up and breaks Marc out, because he digs the chaos.

Planet She-Hulk 4. On Sakaar, Jen is forced to battle her brainwashed ex-bf Jack of Hearts as a court proxy in order to defend a young man accused of murder. Even though she’s triumphant, they behead the guy anyway.

Spider-Man Noir 5. The zombie Nazi guy that stole Peter’s powers turns out to be the corpse of George Stacy. And since he’s wearing Peter’s stolen Spidey costume when Gwen shoots him, it clears up all the pesky loose ends about her wanting to find out Spidey’s secret identity. Then a powerless Peter goes to shut down the Nazi sleeper cell, but a bunch of good ol’ fashioned patriotic American gangsters get their first.

Star Wars:Jar Jar oneshot. Ahmed Best helped write this team up between Senator Jar Jar and Jedi Knight Kelleran Beq. As atonement for having give Chancellor Palpatine his emergency powers, Jar Jar aids Beq in rescuing a young woman with disturbing information about coaxium mining from Assassins sent to kill her. She turns out to be Mira Bridger. Realizing that Palpatine might be up to nefarious shit, JarJar and Beq begin putting together a network that will eventually become the Rebellion.

Action Comics 1095. Pete Ross is dealing with his new knowledge that his best friend Clark is also secretly Superman.

Transformers 29. After Megatron murdered(and ate) Trailbreaker, there’s a huge battle with a bunch of badass splash pages from artist Dan Mora as the Decepticons raid the Ark to free Soundwave. Before the Autobots can mount a counteroffensive, Elita-1 shows up and she’s PISSED at Prime.

Venom 254. Venom and Madame Masque have a final showdown. Masque threatens to reveal MJ’s identity if they ever cross paths again. And Venom threatens to kill Masque if they ever cross paths again. Then Masque escapes. Finally, its revealed that all the other AIM leaders that Masque “killed” to take over AIM aren’t really dead, but they are fine with Masque ‘leading’ AIM and diverting attention away from their real work while she takes the fall for any failures they have. It also teases the upcoming Spidey/Venom/Carnage crossover event.

And now back to the ‘B’ stuff. Which is taking awhile to get properly started.

Oop. Getting behind on my reading. Here’s the first half of 2/18’s books.

Absolute Batman 17. Bruce is trying to maintain contact with all his friends that he’s caused considerable trauma to, but they keep rebuffing him. And now he has to deal with Absolute Poison Ivy.

Amazing Spidey 22.
Astrobots Vol2 4.
New Avengers 9.

Black Panther 60th Anniversary Special oneshot. T’Challa has gone missing, and Kevin ‘Kasper’ Cole, the new White Tiger, has been assigned to track him down. Writers and artists from previous BP series return to tell short stories that are loosely tied together by Cole’s investigation.

Capt America 7.
Catwoman 84. Having escaped the massacre in Italy, Selina flashes back to her and Holly’s youth as child criminals. Selina makes it back to Gotham and buries her mother’s necklace at her gravesite. But Carmine Falcone is waiting for her, and he threatens her loved ones unless she agrees to start working for him.

Daredevil & Punisher 4. Frank agrees to a meeting with DD via Misty Knight. DD has information on the dirty judge that has been authorizing the early releases of violent criminals that Murdock had put in prison. When they go to confront the judge, Frank recognizes him as the assumed deceased former head of the Gnucci crime family; Pa Gnucci.

Doctor Strange 3. After the attack on Heven that killed the males and the Regent of Heven Idyl, the ancient wizard Vyrbodin sends the scythe magic shade of his deceased mother to attack Strange and Angela in the Light Elf realm of Alfheim. The former princess of Alfheim is confronted by her mother, the queen and crumbles to dust in her arms. Then Angela gets word from Heven that the Regent’s daughter has sent a cohort of Angels to apprehend Vyrbodin in the dark elf realm of Svartlfheim. Which the Dark Elves will totally see as act of war. This Vyrbodin dude playing chess and everyone else playing checkers.

Dungeons of Doom 2. The four different factions(US Military, Latverian freedom fighters, Hydra, and the lone Wakandan on a secret mission) explore Dr. Doom’s hidden vaults and finding more and more insidious secrets that maybe Doom was actually safeguarding to protect humanity from.

Fantastic Four 8. The FF finally track down Galactus and his urgent SOS message to Susan. Because he’s been attacked by a Susan Storm who’s powers manifested in a different way, and she wiped out every living person on her Earth.

Generation X23 1. Laura Kinney and her sister Gabby find a facility that’s experimenting on young mutants. But when they break into the facility to rescue the mutants, they find a bunch of starry-eyed fanboys who’ve waiting for their idol, X23, to show up.

GIJoe 19. Duke confronts Clutch and Hound(y’know because a TF killed his friend and all the giant robots are evil. The huge plot twist I can’t talk about facilitates the Joe team splitting into smaller groups to hunt down sources of Energon. And Matt Trakker has been on the run, but he’s tracked down by Scrap-Iron! This book is getting so fucking good.

Deadly Hands of K’un Lun 1. I’m putting this in the Iron Fist books. Lie Lin’s brother unceremoniously kills all the Immortal Weapons from the other Seven Cities in his takeover of K’un Lun so he can find some mystical gems to ressurect some ancient god of war Chiyou. Danny Rand is the new avatar of Osiris, the Egyptian god of dead. And Lie is living with former Iron Fist Pei and her uncle. Lie, WhiteTiger and Elektra(erm sorry “Daredevil”) team up when his brother sends a bunch of zombie K’un Lun ninjas to attack. I’m annoyed they used the Immortal Weapons as cannon fodder. I’m also annoyed Pei’s story was resolved in a TPB that I never bought because they didn’t want to release the single issues of it. But it’s cool seeing all three IFs in the same book.

It’s Jeff meets Daredevil oneshot. More digital shorts featuring the adorable little land shark.

Up next, the second pile of books from 2/18.

2/18. Part II

Knull 2. Knull heads back to the planet where he had his final battle with Atum, the god of light, several eons ago. While they both laid comatose, Gorr the ‘god butcher’ stole his Necrospear. But Atum’s Light Spear remains on the planet. Knull get there, only to find Thanos waiting for him having retrieved the Spear first.

Nightwing 135. Nightwing has to lead the children out of the Cirque Du Sin dimension, but he's being chased by the evil clown Zanni. Nightwing Prime shows up to stop Zanni, then destroys the portal back to Bludhaven, and stays behind to keep Zanni from threatening the children’s dreams from now on.

1776 4. The soldier Spidey took a bullet for turns out to be his ancestor. Morgan Le Fey unleashes a bunch of demons to decimate the Continental Army, forcing a last stand by the time displaced heroes.

Star Wars 10. Final issue? Is Marvel cooling its heels on having the SW license?
Titans 32. Final Issue. DC KO tie in. Nightwing and Raven convince Terra to maybe try being a hero again. Superboy shows up and stops Grail from beating Donna and Roy. Then Raven uses her soul self powers to gather all the Titans together to hug it out.

Ultimate Black Panther 24. Final Issue. Inan’s astral projection rescues T’Challa from the Progenitors after he rejects their offer to become their new avatar. He then makes the decision to end Wakanda’s isolationism and joins the battle against the Maker’s forces in the rest of the Ultimate books. But lastly, he realizes his bloodline is tainted, and makes Killmonger promise to kill him before he can ever have an heir.

Ultimate Spider-Man 24. Final Issue. Richard and Felicity make it through the gauntlet to out the macguffin thingie in the whatchawhoozit and broadcast Ban and Jonah’s message of Kingpin’s corruption to the world. Peter defeats Mr. Negative and Kingpin. Then they turn on each other and fall to their deaths. Happy Endings all around!

Wolverine 16. Wolverine and Silver Sable protect an innocent town of mutant refugees from the Canadian govt agents who have branded them as domestic terrorists for just existing. Alpha Flight has second thoughts about helping when the agents start interrogating the mutants with torture.

Wolverine:Weapons of Armageddon 1. A prequel series setting up this summer’s big Armageddon crossover event. Wolverine stumbles across yet another secret govt Super Soldier program and tracks a survivor who escaped out into the woods. The facility director calls in Nuke to stop Wolverine. And they introduce some hermit dude who’s living in a log cabin that looks like he’s a former Capt America. I don’t know if this is some deep dive continuity, or if they’re retconning yet another Super Soldier into the history. Either could be true.

Wonder Woman 30. Eris, The goddess witch of discord and doubt, tries to get the Amazons to fight amongst themselves to protect Diana’s infant daughter. But Diana uses the lasso of truth to get them all seeing themselves positively. And Lizzy herself is completely free of doubt, so Eris is powerless against her baby giggles.

World’ Finest 48. Earth 3’s Ultraman and Owlman are looking for a secret weapon from STAR labs. After decimating the Doom Patrol and Will Magnus’ Metal Men, they open the vault and find Superman and Batman in stasis.

X-Men 25. Cyclops’ team head to Arizona looking for Doug Ramsey and confront the Fenris Twins and they’re Maga/Nazi cultists. After mopping up the bad guys, Crimson Commando, the new head of the Office of National Emergency, shows up to take credit for the takedown, and implies the X-Men are working hand in hand with ONE to stop evil mutants.

Uncanny X-Men 24. Elsa Bloodstone and the Legion of Monsters are under the influence of a witch or someone trying to break into Haven House. The X-Men battle the assorted monsters, but Werewolf by Night bites Logan turning him into Werewolverine! I think Gail Simone just liked the idea of ‘Werewolverine’ as a last page cliffhanger.

Up next, 2/25’s books. Probably also in two parts. And eventually, the ‘B’ stuff. I mean it.

2/25 Part I.

Absolute Wonder Woman 17. Veronica Cale has bound Zatanna’s magic to Diana’s magic to wreak havoc. But Zatanna finds a loophole and uses Diana’s magic to use Zatanna’s magic to speak in reverse and break Cale’s spell on Z. So Cale sends in an even worse wizard to stop them.

Amazing Spidey/Venom:Death Spiral 1. Nine part crossover event with Venom, Carnage, and Spidey. I’m well over a hundred issues behind on my ASM reading, but since I’m current on Venom and Carnage I’m going to read this event as it comes out. A new symbiote(?) killer named Torment is targeting people with the surnames Parker, Watson, and Brock. And Peter(whos been out in space for several months) comes back to find Ben Reilly has ruined all his relationships and that Carnage knows his secret identity.

Batman:Dark Knight Returns 1. Facsimile reprint of the original issue. Always a joy to read this.

Detective Comics 1106. The conclusion of Taylor’s first arc. The Lion has doused all of Gotham with his fear-inhibiting gas. Batman uses Scarecrow’s fear toxin as a makeshift antidote to defeat Lion, and Mr. Terrific spreads the real antidote via cropdusters. Solid new villain, and first arc from Taylor.

Black Panther Intergalactic 3. Shuri finds T’Challa on a remote planet amd helps him defeat spliced clones of himself merged with villains like Doc Ock and Juggernaut. Meanwhile, another clone is making his case whybhe should be the new Emperor of the Wakandan Empire.

Flash 30. DC KO tie in. Darkseid is trying to stop Wally from stopping Bart from stopping Barry from stopping the gret machine during the oroginal Crisis on Infinite Earths. Wally evades Darkseid and convinces Bart that Barry has to do what happened originally to protect the timeline.

GIJoe ARAH 2. Facsimile reprint with added notes from Hama. They’ve been jumping around with these, but they’ve done at least a half dozen already.

Infernal Hulk 4. In the Hulkscape, the Hulk is finding different versions of himself (Joe Fixit, Gladiator Hulk etc) and comes across the Mother of Horrors that the Eldest consumed when she became the new Infernal Hulk.

Hulk Smash Everything 3. The Leader throws the Hulk into the black hole at the center of the galaxy, where he spends several billiion centuries reforming into the Hulk and several billion more getting strong enough to punch his way out of the gravity well. There, at the end of time, he finds Galactus waiting and he beats him up. Then Franklin realizes there’s some time travel shenanigans and zips Hulk back to when he was at the start of the issue. Fun stuff from Ryan North.

Iron Man 2. AIM is trying to “create” a new Tony Stark by exposing a bunch of kidnapped, brilliant young innovators to horrible torturous circumstances to see if any of them will create the means to escape like Tony did. Tony heads to Madripoor to confront MODOK, only to find out that AIM has sent a kill squad for MODOK, forcing him and Iron Man to team up.

Justice League Unlimited 16. DC KO tie in. Owlwoman has betrayed Mr. Terrific to Neron. But then she sees the remaining Leaguers on Earth fighting the hopeless battle to get the last of the evacuees off Earth, and she’s inspired to sacrifice herself to stop Neron and let Terrific escape.

Marvel Free Previews 54. Solicits for May. Spider-Man/Superman!

Up next, 2/25 Part II.

2/25 Part II

Psylocke:Ninja 2. Retro series set around the time the X-Men went thru the Seige Perilous. Psylocke is sent to the Chaste’s hidden mountain fortress to assassinate Elektra. She fights the Chaste ninjas and battles Elektra when she wakes up. But using her psychic knife attack causes a feedback which partially restores her memories and frees Elektra from her Hand conditioning.

Punisher 1. Legacy #280. Frank is still getting headaches from his impromptu surgery that removed Kingpin’s control chip from his head. He’s holding Microchip prisoner because he needs Linus’ help to fix the surgery. And Jigsaw is back and he’s making a play to be the new Kingpin by taking over Tombstone’s territory. This is basically issue 6 of the Red Band series, since everything in this issue is advancing the plot of that series. Also, Jigsaw? Again? Really? Those quibbles aside, this is probably the most faithful Frank has been written since Rucka’s run.

Rogue 2. Rogue is having flashbacks to a mission she doesn’t remember when she was in the Brotherhood of evil mutants. She goes to Mystique and Destiny for answers, but they just give her a bunch of cryptic gobbledygoo. On the way home, her powers start acting wonky and she crashes into a warehouse where some shady deal is happening. She has to keep changing powers to help her escape.

Sorcerer Supreme 3. Wanda continues to legitimize her claim to the mantle of Sorcerer Supreme against the Vishanti’s chosen successor, Agatha Harkness. And we learn the connection between Agatha and the Vishanti may go back further than we knew.

Spider-Man & Wolverine 10. Final issue. Peter and Logan are back in the 616, and Peter drops Logan off at Mariko’s apartment for an awkward reunion, where they both decode they’ve on in their lives. Then Arachnix attacks Spidey and it takes Spidey, Wolverine, and Scarlet Samurai(Mariko’s new costumed persona) to defeat him. Then they get Reed Richards to send him back to his universe.

Superman 35. DC KO tie in. Lois and Prime get back to Metropolis and get the Superman robot’s message to Time Trapper that reveals Doomsday’s purpose was always to prepare Clark for this battle with Darkseid. He’s the Alpha energy to Darkseid’s Omega energy. Armed with this knowledge, Time Trapper heads off to find Clark before the final battle. Lois introduces Prime to Clark’s parents.

Mortal Thor 7. Mr. Hyde steals a taxi cab and tries to run Sigurd over with it. That’s it. That’s the entire issue.

The End 2099 3. Abyssal’s multiversal heroes have all been turned into symbiotes by the Knull seeds. But Spider-Man 3099 is immune to infection because syms are an airborne virus in his future, so the heroes of 2099 use that to break the Knull hold on everyone. The Mephisto teleports a bunch of the heroes away somewhere for “the real battle” whatever that means.

Ultimates 21. Luke Cage is getting heroes recruited and trained for the final battle. But Emmanuel DaCosta has assembled a “Heroic Super Team” to be the public face of the Maker’s Council. Cage’s team faces off against these “Defenders” and makes short work of them.

Void Rivals 27. Holy shit! Sharkticons everywhere! The Quintessons are invading the planet! That is, until the two main characters figure out their soldiers can use Energon to power up their weapons and fight back. That’s right, the energy source that this entire collective comic universe is named after, is actually a power source that can be used to fight Sharkticons. What a plot twist!! Also, the creepy warlord guy is secretly the one chick’s brother. Meh.

Inglorious X-Force 2. Cable is trying to figure out which member of X-Force kills President Kamala Khan in the future. This issue, he eliminates Hellverine as a suspect when the team fights a bunch of zombies and magic users who were holding a faerie lady hostage and she tells Cable that Akihiro has a good heart.

Up next…hmmm I could just read this week’s books and get ahead of the curve.

3/4’s books (That’s March 4th, not three quarters)

Absolute Superman 17. A giant purple Parasite goo envelops everyone in Metropolis. Hawkman wants to write them off and kill the Parasite, but Kal enters the goo to tell everyone not to be afraid and gets the goo to dissipate. Meanwhile, Brainiac has left Lex Luthor tied to his front porch in front of his ENTIRE dismembered extended family reunion. Yikes.

Amazing Spidey 23. Part 2 of Death Spiral. Peter confronts Venom not realizing that it’s not Eddie anymore; it’s MJ. When she disabuses him of this notion, he begins hyperventilating. Then he explains he’s been in outer space and when she revealed she was Venom to Peter before, it was actually Ben posing as Peter. Then he reveals that Eddie told him in a voicemail that Carnage knows he’s Spiderman. Also, the new symbiote killer kills Herman Schultz, the Shocker.

Avengers 36. Final issue.
Batgirl 17.

Batman 7. Batman heads to Arkham Tower to confront ‘Patient Ten’, formerly known as The Joker. The Joker’s therapy has brought him lucidity and regret for his previous crimes, and he insists that Batman prevent him from ever getting released from Arkham again. But he also has a warning, that there are whispers of someone coming to kill…Bruce.

Arcadia 3.
Daredevil & Punisher 5. Frank and DD take out the mob stronghold where Pa Gnucci and his cohorts are hiding out. Most of them turn on each other, until only Gnucci is left. Daredevil convinces Frank that leaving Gnucci alive to talk will uncover further corruption in the legal system, so Frank shoots him in both legs, but lets him live.

DC KO 5. Doomsday/Time Trapper builds a pocket time dimension where he can give Superman all the built up ‘Alpha’ energy he’s accumulated since his creation. Superman fights Darkseid across all space and time for the crown of King Omega, but he’s just been stalling until all his friends show up and the heroes all beat up Darkseid. Then Superman “goes away”. What a limp fucking ending to the series. It also ‘sets up’ the next event….Absolute Crisis.

Iceman Omega. Didn’t know what this was when I bought it. It’s a collected reprint of a bunch of Iceman stories from all the various Marvel Voices issues over the last couple years. Meh.

Marvel Team Up 14. Image reprint of the crossover issue where Spidey meets Invincible. I only bought it because McFarlane drew Spidey on the variant cover I bought.

Moonstar 1. Kinda follow up sequel series to last year’s Magik ongoing. Dani Moonstar was part of a mystic cult that was protecting Earth. The leadeship ended up being corrupt, but now the rest of the cult needs her help to stop a thief that stole an ancient cursed Norse sword and turned everyone in Boulder, CO into zombies.

Nova Centurion 5. Rich confronts Peter Quill. Then Cammi explodes into a giant space root system that starts invading the space station they’re on.

Sonic Racing Crossworlds oneshot.
Spider-Gwen 8. Gwen feels bad about the guy she accidentally killed and goes to Norman Osborn for advice. He makes her feel better about it, but then she’s like ‘oh man, Norman Osborn is giving me life advice. Ew.’ Also, Mysterio might just be fucking with her and she hasn’t killed anyone.

Star Wars:Shadow of Maul 1. Prequel to the new animated show. Maul’s barely in it. It’s mostly about a cop fighting corruption on some shady space moon or whatever.

Wolverine 17. Logan and Silver Sable are helping the Morlocks set up their new town. And also banging each other. One of the kids gets kidnapped by a giant cockroach and Wolverine goes and stabs him. The cockroach guy. Not the kid.

X-Men 26. The local sheriff gets kidnapped and put on a ship at sea. The X-Men go to rescue her, and the whole boat is a trap called a ‘Danger Room’ commissioned by the ONE to dispatch the ‘X-Men problem’.

X-Men Annual 1. Not only is this yet another ‘1’ Annual, but it’s starring the Uncanny X-Men team in New Orleans, and not Cyclops’ team from Alaska. Get it together, Marvel.

Up next, the ‘B’ stuff. No really. I’m not kidding. Fer reals.

Here we go with a big pile of ‘B’ I’ve been reading the last month or so.

Black Lighting 1. If you’d read any previous BL series, or the Absolute Power event, or the current JL Unlimited series, you’d know what's going on here. But if you hadn’t, this book did you no favors in explaining BL’s origin, or history, or that his daughters BOTH have lightning powers, but one of them got depowered and went missing during AP. DC just assumes you read every single book they put out every month. This was a six issue mini, but I only have the first issue.

Black Manta 1-6. Aquaman’s nemesis got his own mini. One of his underlings feels like he got the shaft and Manta didn’t live up the the promises he made to be a supervillain. So, using some magic rock, the guy gets his own villain get up calling himself Devil Ray, and he’s gonna eradicate Atlantis and raise it from the sea after he kills Manta for doing a piss poor job. Meh.

Black Panther 1-25. Ta-Nahisi Coate’s grand Intergalactic Empire of Wakanda saga. Thousands of years ago, a bunch of Wakandans left Earth and formed a galactic outpost that grew into an Empire spanning five galaxies. A slave wakes up with amnesia and is rescued by a group of freedom fighters resisting the Emperor N’Jadaka’s tyrannical rule. The first dozen issues are about the slave, over the course of several years, working his way up thru the ranks of the resistance to become its fiercest warrior. About halfway thru the series, he gets his memory back, and (duh) it’s T’Challa. He sent the original space ship, and it got stuck in a wormhole that sent it back thru time. Then, when he discovered the Empire, he went to meet the Emperor N’Jadaka(who’s rocking a Klyntar symbiote) who saw T’Challa as a threat and had his mind wiped. When N’Jadaka sets his sights on claiming Earth as part of his Empire, T’Challa returns to Earth and rallies the Wakandan forces and his allies(which is every black superhero on the planet…which metaphorically, I get what Coates is doing there. But logically, I was like whaaaa? An intergalactic invasion and you only called certain people?) There was a subplot where T’Challa has to sacrifice the Djalia, which is the connected memories of all the previous rulers of Wakanda in the afterlife, to restore the memories of the billions of slaves of the Empire. It was a pretty powerful moment. The final arc was N’Jadaka was killed, but his psyche was combined with the symbiote and took over the resurrected body of Killmonger, but in the end he was defeated by T’Challa, who reluctantly accepted the mantle of Emperor. A fairly ambitious series. Props to Coates for trying something new. It didn’t always fire, but there were some cool moments. And now we’ve got Wakanda mixed into the cosmic side of Marvel.

Black Panther Legends 1-4. This miniseries streamlines and retells T’Challa’s origin with all the added retcons, like his adopted brother Hunter, and his early meeting with Ororo before Ulysses Klawe killed his father and he became the next king. Pretty decent.

Black Panther 1-15. The next ongoing series from John Ridley followed up on Coate’s previous run(before the Intergalactic saga) where T’Challa agreed to step down as monarch in favor of a democratically elected government. While he was king, T’Challa had set up secret guerilla insurgents across the globe, and someone starts killing them off. Evidence points to T’Challa being the perpetrator and he gets branded a traitor by the new government, so he has to on the run to clear his name. I was overthinking who the story would reveal as the bad guy, because it supposedly was the new head of security for the govt and he kills himself when they find out. The. There was a weird short story arc where some interdimensional slave driver is looking to “colonize” Earth and BP and the Avengers have to dissuade him. It was a little on the nose, metaphor wise. The final arc had the secret guerilla agents who had supposedly been killed revealing that they had faked their deaths(which is what I thought when was reading it!) and they are trying to dismantle the planets internet by holding three major server hubs hostage. They stop the insurgents, but T’Challa previous actions come to light , and he’s banished from Wakanda.

Black Panther:Unconquered oneshot. A stand alone oneshot where some German cultists try and steal some Wakandan artifacts. Not sure why this was it’s own book. It’s like a filler story that wasn’t epic enough to be an annual or whatever. It wasn’t bad. It was just…an extra issue of BP.

Black Panther 1-10. The next ongoing series by Eve Ewing was…a hot mess. The ‘banished’ T’Challa is hiding out in disguise in one of Wakanda’s northern cities(think the Detroit of Wakanda, if that makes sense) and protecting the city like Batman. A couple rival crimelords are fighting with each other(there are crimelords in Wakanda? What??) and one of them makes a deal with some psychic monster that T’Challa’s grandfather or great-grandfather had banished away, but had freed itself when the Djalia was erased. So this creature has made a deal to build a space station where it was storing the souls of people it had kidnapped in a pocket dimension. Or some shit. It wasn’t a good run. The supporting characters weren’t memorable, and the whole thing was just…ugh.

Black Panther Intergalactic 1-2. The newest ongoing comes after the big Imperial event shake up that reset all the cosmic books. T’Challa is back in outer space being the Emperor again. And some weird scientist guy that worked for the previous Emperor had a secret planet where we was making clones, and one of those clones has come forward saying he’s T’Challa and he should be the new emperor. Issue 3 just came out last week, which I recapped already.

Predator vs Black Panther 1-4. A couple of sibling Yautja’s are having a clan dispute. The younger one gets his ass kicked and decides to come to Earth for the vibranium in Wakanda, so he can make weapons and go back and conquer his brother and father’s clans. But Black Panther, Shuri, and the Dora Milaje realize they are being hunted by aliens and fight back. Decent.

So that’s Black Panther all caught up. I feel like it’s been getting steadily worse with each successive series. Like, they’ve lost focus on what makes T’Challa a compelling character. Or they’re trying too hard to incorporate the MCU into the comics. i don’t know.

But next is Black Widow, and Blade. I already read the Blood Hunt Event and all the tie-ins, so after that is a small smattering of Blue Beetle and some other ‘B’ books. And then the ‘C’s at the end of the box, including Capt America.

Back with more ‘B’ stuff.

Started a short lived Black Widow ongoing back in 2021. The first arc was an amnesiac Natasha living life with her husband and baby in San Francisco. Her allies are wondering whether to restore her memories because she seems to be blissfully happy. But eventually she gets her memories back and Bucky has to put her family in WitSec so her enemies can’t find them, but she can’t know where they are either. And as far as I know, that’s still a dangling plot thread that Widow has a hidden baby out there somewhere in the world. Anyway…

BW 6-10. The next arc had Yelena show up, and along side helpful newbie Anya Corazon, one of the several Spider-Girls, and a spunky pickpocket named Lucy that gets electric powers, the two Widows stop a power broker thats injecting people with super power DNA and trafficking them to various ne’erdowells to use as superhuman cannon fodder. The injections eventually burn the recipients out, so they have to find a cure before Lucy disintegrates.

11-15. The third arc was the team tracking down whomever was behind the power ups, and getting extra help from Widow’s two ex-boyfriends, Hawkeye and Bucky. Widow faces off against an old(retconned) nemesis of hers called the Living Blade that kicked her ass the first time they fought. She has to summon the courage to face him again and bring down the crime ring responsible for trading in super powered people. I think the series ended due to low sales, but I always enjoy Thompson’s writing. She has a good handle on banter between characters, and she uses the history of the character rather than ignoring it.

Black Widow & Hawkeye 1-4. BW is wearing her new symbiote during this series. Hawkeye gets accused of assassinating a Russian Envoy and gets a bunch of assassins hunting him around the world. Widow saves his life in Madripoor, then they have to figure out how to clear Clint’s name. It turns out an arms dealer was trying to start a war between Russia and America so it could sell arms to both sides. The arms dealer had poisoned the Envoy to blame America, so Hawkeye killed the guy first, so HE’D take the blame instead of causing an international incident.

Black Widow:Venomous oneshot. BW is having trust issues with her new symbiote, so she designs a ‘Red Room’ training program for the sym to get them in synch with each other.

And some Blade books.

Blade:Vampire Nation oneshot. Dracula has an official UN sanctioned vampire nation built in the ruins of the Chernobyl exclusion zone. Blade has become the reluctant “Sheriff” keeping the peace in this new nation. When a failed assassination attempt on Dracula occurs, Blade needs to investigate and find the guilty parties. It’s some rogue vampires in Dracula’s inner council, but also, it’s an opportunity for Dracula to eliminate his rivals and use Blade to do it.

Blade 1-9. A short ongoing Blade series from 2023, right before the Blood Hunt event. I thought it was a 9 issue series, but it went to 10, so I don’t have the finale. But the gist is, a werewolf asks Blade to protect a young woman from a cult of assassins trying to kill her. Blade kills the cult leader, but realizes too late the young girl is actually an ancient demon who personifies ‘evil’ in people. With the help of the cult leader’s daughter, a bootycall/mystical arms dealer who Blade occasionally shacks up with, and guest stars like Dr. Strange, Hulk, and Satanna, Blade has to steal Lucifer’s Lightbringer sword and try to undo the damage he did by not letting the cult assassinate the Adana. I’m not a big Blade fan, but this was a solid read. I just don’t know how it ends.

Red Band:Blade 1. After Blood Hunt, there was a five issue ‘Red Band’ mini series, the first of several of these gimmick polybagged series. I didn’t even bother cutting open the first bag to read it, let alone buy the rest of them.

Bloodline:Daughter of Blade 1-5. Just what it says. Blade has a teenage daughter who lives in Atlanta with her mom. And she just found out she’s 1/4th Vampire and has vampire powers. But also, high school and shit. Does EVERY character need a legacy hero? I submit no. Did this series suck? No. Was it necessary? Also no.

After this week’s books theres a Blood Hunt mini that spun out of the event, Blue Beetle, a Beetle and Boo$ter series, some Bring on the Bad Guys oneshots, and whatver other ‘B’ books before I get to the ‘C’s at the end of the box.
But first, this weeks books.

Last week(3/10)’s books.

Absolute Batman 18. Mayor Gordon reveals he knows the 7’4” 600 lb Bruce Wayne is also the 7’4” 600 lb Batman. Because there’s no way there are TWO impossibly mutant sized citizens of Gotham. Batman convinces Poison Ivy to destroy the spores she’s threatening Gotham with, and then he double crosses her and destroys her human heart. Because he’s decided to be an asshole and stop visiting his friends whose lives he fucked up by being Batman. Also, his mom is part of the Court of Owls.

Absolute Green Lantern 12. Hal taps his inner Sapphire Lantern pink powers to counteract the black monstrosity being controlled by Hector Hammond and releases Todd Rice from inside it. And Tomar Re finally shows up.

Alias:Red Band 1.
Black Cat 8. Felicia and Venom/MJ are in the Negative Zone where they have to break into a vault to steal back an embarrassing audition tape of MJs. But once they break into the vault, Felicia accidentally finds the Siege Perilous and activates it.

Doctor Strange 4. Dr. Strange and Angela manage to get the Dark Elves and the Angels from Heven to stop attacking each other when they realize they both want to kill the evil sorcerer Vyrbodin. But this dude has been one step ahead of everybody the whole time, and he’s released scythe warriors across the Nine Realms to kill every child everywhere.

Planet of the Apes vs the Fantastic Four 2. The apes have the FF’s powers. Reed has a plan to get them back to their own Earth, but it requires them to go find Charlton Heston’s spaceship that sunk in the lake. And somehow, Dr. Doom has arrived.

GIJoe:ARAH 326. The extraction of an intelligence asset in Benzheen goes sideways, forcing Roadblock, Mongoose, Scarlett, Duke, and Snake-Eyes to improvise and escape the area. Somehow, SE being able to talk makes him even more of a badass.

Sirens:Love Hurts 2. Black Canary is trying to juggle her wedding preparations with her investigation into young women getting killed by a serial killer. And her uneasy alliance with Harley, Ivy, and Selina isn’t helping. Lots of swearing and Selina fucking Batman on a rooftop.

Harley and Ivy:Life & Crimes 4. After having just knocked boots for the first time, Harley and Ivy are interrupted by the cops, and have to escape while being butt nekked for the entire issue. Along the way, they deal with their burgeoning feelings for each other, and Harley explains she just got out of a toxic relationship, so she realistically has some barriers up and Ivy should respect that.

Hulk Smash Everything 4. Having just returned from the end of time with billions of years up pent up gamma energy, Hulk faces off against the Avengers. And he gets so angry he punches the Earth and cracks it, which starts a chain reaction that’s pretty much gonna kill everything on Earth.

Imperial Guardians 1. The new fragile Galactic Union sometimes requires some dirty, disavowable actions to maintain the peace. Star-Lord has tasked Maximus the Mad to form a black ops team of Gamora, Capt Marvel, Amadeus Cho, Darkhawk, and Cosmic Ghost Rider to take on these heinous acts in the name of the greater good.

Magik and Colossus 2. The Rasputin siblings are back in Russia fighting Russian folktale creatures that have been unleashed on the populace.

1776 5. The heroes stop Morgan LeFey from changing history. Then Cap gives a big long boring speech to the Founding Fathers. Bleh.
Sonic the Hedgehog 85.
Spider-Man:Meals to Astonish oneshot. Overpriced oneshot featuring “famous” chefs and some cancelled digital comics about some chick that Tony Stark hired to be his chef. Sometimes, being a completist backfires.

Storm 2. Ororo asks the new Sorcerer Supreme, Wanda Maximoff, to prepare her for the upcoming War Above All.

Action Comics 1096. Mark Waid has been writing ‘flashback’ stories since Clark’s time as Superboy is now back in continuity. In this issue, time starts acting weird near the Metropolis Science Expo. When Superboy narrows down the focal point, Mary Marvel, Booster Gold, and Martian Manhunter from the ‘present’ pop out and ask for his help.

Transformers 30. Elita-One arrives from Cybertron and picks a fight with Optimus over his leadership skills. Optimus capitulates and gives Elita the Matrix of Leadership. She is now Elita Prime and insists all the Autobots return with her to Cybertron. Those that stay behind have their insignias scrubbed off.

The End 2099 4. Mephisto “kills” a bunch of his warrriors so he can send them on a secret mission into the Negative Zone to retrieve the Ultimate Nullifier from a bad guy named Antitheisis to use against Abyssal. Along the way, Hulk 2099, Hyperion 2099, and RadioactiveMan 2099 all sacrifice themselves.

Logan:Black White and Blood 3. Logan in 1930’s Arizona during the great depression, and NYC in the 60s stopping white supremacists from blowing up a black church, and finally in 80s Hollywood, rescuing an old friend’s daughter from a cult. This series has been pretty solid so far.

X-Men United 1. Emma Frost has decided to start a new school. But this is purely a psychic location called “Greymatter Lane’ that all the X-Men have access to. Some of the X-Men are all for it, but Cyclops thinks it’s a bad idea. And writer Eve Ewing has created like a half dozen more new students, because as we all know, there’s a shortage of mutant students and there aren’t literally like hundreds of characters who’ve shown in up like six issues of some previous X-book and then are promptly forgot about because the next writer just creates new characters. I bought both covers. Why is Rogue the only person of the 40 X-Men on the covers that’s required to show her ass?
