The film score thread

uh, y'know, the sounds that sound good together... sometimes... and sometimes sounds like the disgusting "squish squish" sound Slicker's mom makes whenever she walks

The film score thread

Post by anarky »

I was going to call this "Danny Elfman will kick you squah in the nuts -- the film score thread," but there's apparently a limit on the title length. [ V]

I'm curious who else here listens to film music, and maybe if it's more than just me, we could start some kind of real discussion.

I'm not going to even try to start this at SSG, because (shortly before it gets buried in a barrage of new threads) I don't want this:

"Hey, what did you guys think of the score to AOTC?"
"It was cool I guess."
"It sucked. Lucas is a moron. Screw him and the horse he rode in on!"
"Shut up, ***."
"You shut up!"
"No, you shut up!"
"Back to you, no take-backs!"
"Shut up or I'll get my girlfriend Natalie Portman to kick your ass!"
"Thread closed!!"

Right now I'm listening to the Planet of the Apes. I've had this for a long time, but this may be the first time I've actually paid a lot of attention to it. It's not the completely wretched techno-fest I thought it was, and I think I rather like it. Something that I'm pretty sure is a love theme (it's been a while since I saw the movie) is especially good. Elfman's great at those melodramatic love themes. [ninja]

The only real score I have ever listened to is Beetlejuice. They had some good work on that soundtrack. I am not too much for the scores and shit though. Maybe I willbuy the Sw ones and listen to them. or maybe not. I just might download some of them as well.

I expected more input from you, EP. I seem to remember you stating once on another forum that shall remain nameless that you mostly listen to classical and film scores.

Gladiator is a damn good score, though. I keep meaning to get the "More Music From" CD, but other stuff keeps sneaking to higher positions on my "must buy" list.

KH, you definitely have to get the Star Wars scores. There are three excellent two-disc sets for the SE's of the CT, as well as an older four-disc box set that has the pre-SE music (meaning "Lapti Nek" and "Ewok Celebration"). For the prequels, there are nice single discs for each, and a kinda weird two-disc set for TPM that's the music edited exactly as it's heard in the movie (meaning more than a couple of rough chops). It's still worth getting, since it's got about twice the amount of music as the single disc.

I like the Beetlejuice soundtrack (Elfman is always best in my book when he does lots of eccentric "la la la la" vocal bits). I actually think his theme to the Beetlejuice TV series is better, though. (It's on one of his "Music for a Darkened Theater" compilations.) If you like Beetlejuice, I think the closest things to it are Edward Scissorhands, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Batman Returns.

Elfman's getting back into better stuff (though Hulk is more than a tad repetitive), but some of his late 90s scores are absolutely horrible. For some reason, he seems to have decided for a few years that minimalist techno is best. Like I said, I prefer his eccentric stuff and his melodramatic stuff (like Sommersby or Sleepy Hollow).

Unrelated but not: has anyone heard the full score from Daredevil, and how is it? I didn't know a CD existed before seeing it in a Wherehouse yesterday. The very little bit of music I recall hearing in the film was good, but I'm not sure if it's worth picking up or not.

if you're referring to DE... well, try typing his name. it's one of only two words that are edited here!

danny elfman is awesome. i love the spider-man score, sleepy hollow, frighteners... the list goes on and on.

thomas newman is awesome, as well. he did american beauty and six feet under. he's randy newman's more talented brother. all of randy's songs sound the same...

Yeah, Frighteners is awesome. Took me forever to track it down, though.

And the reference was Dedd-I. It was, uh, "remains-a-juvenile." :)

he's not "banned" here, i just don't want to have to look at his name...

ANYWAY...

the music for the lord of the rings trilogy (so far...) has been really great, too. i looked it up on amazon.com and it's howard shore, who i didn't know i was a big fan of! he did the music for silence of the lambs, se7en, gangs of new york, ed wood, dogma, the game, crash, the fly, and panic room. quite prolific!

The music following Gandalf's demise is just rife with emotion. The LOTR soundtrack is wonderful.

Two words: Big Fish.

Two more words: frickin' incredible.

Two final words: Oscar worthy.
