I went to college with a guy named Dang Ho. At first, everyone wondered why he didn't go by a middle name. Turns out that was his middle name; his first name was Phuc, which was obviously mispronounced quite a bit.

In the directory, the printer used the format "Firstname Middleinitial Lastname." In his case, "Phuc D Ho."

We get a lot of funny names at my work too. The other day, this kid came in and his name was Meesuck Lee. It would have been perfect if his last name was Cok. But there have also been people who just have unfortunate names. This fat kid who came in a couple weeks ago was named Robinhood Gutierrez. His fucking name was Robinhood. And we've also had Ronald McDonald and Peter Pan.
My neighbor's name is Karen Faren.

I told Cappy about this, I was shopping a month or two ago and I was walking past this geeky-lookin dude who's daughter was acting up and I kinda thought I heard him say "No, padme". I thought it MUST have been an auditory hallucination, but she kept acting up and he said it again real clear-like and I felt shame- not only is it ridiculous, but the name is actually stupid to an impressive degree


I didn't know what to do but I felt like I should have done something, now all's I can think is that I failed in the cave

Thinkin about it, I should have just said "THE CAVE!!!! THE CAVE!!!" in a yoda voice and let his dumb fanboy ass figure it out

In my sister's class (she's a third-grade teacher), one of the girl's name is Babygirl and her sister is Tutugirl. They're from Nigeria or something, but it's still fucking weird.

there have been, of late, a lot of courts ruling that some parents can't name their children what they've chosen. this brings me to two observations:

1: courts shouldn't meddle in the affairs of what people name their children

and

2: parents shouldn't be dumbasses and name their kids "second thursday after labor day smith"

In Japan, there are very strict rules about what a child can and can't be named. I know of one case where a couple was trying to make a point (at the obvious future expense of their daughter's sanity) by naming her "Devil." (Curiously, I don't think it was "Oni," which is the only word I know for devil that comes to mind.) Crazy thing, not only did they not allow it because it could offend other people and cause hardship for the kid, but because one of the Kanji symbols (Japanese letters, in case you couldn't figure that out) wasn't approved for use in names.

I assume other countries have similar rules.

It might've been Akuma. That actually has a "Japanese female name" ring to it.

I've had to bend reality a bit on this one for my projects. The lack of rigid rules for Japanese names is one difference from the real world. (I still guarantee someone will bitch and moan about some of the names not being legal under the real-world rules.)

Kappa is another demon name from Japan, as is Tengu

Kappa is more of a fairy type, though, from what I understand, and Tengu are something altogether more motherfucking badass. I think it's Akuma, but I don't remember when or where I read the article, so I can't verify.
